Since the dawn of the computer age we have often complained about computers that are non-responsive, crashing constantly, and susceptible to all the other technical glitches that are a part of a computing life. Despite all of our computing advances, it seems that viruses, trojan horses, and corrupt flash drives still rampage our desktops and laptops.
I often get phone calls that include the following talking points; “How did this happen? My computer used to work great. Why does my computer stutter when I play my favorite Flash game or You Tube movie? I only purchased that computer 3 years ago! Help!!!”
In truth, there are a number of simple techniques that can great improve your computing experience. With this in mind, I will share with you a few of these techniques.
Buy a Mac- At first glance; many people will shake their head at this advice. Aren’t Macs costly? While this is true, one must carefully analyze the total cost of ownership. Total Cost of Ownership studies will often look at the shelf life of the computer, break/fix issues, as well as other items. With this in mind, consider the following;
o Macs by in large typically outlive their PC counterparts by a ratio of 3:1.
o Macs (for the most part) do not fall victim to the assortment of viruses, Trojan horses, and malware prevalent in the Internet age.
o The standard and 3 year warranty services for Mac computers have been rated higher than its PC counterparts for the past 10 years. For more on this story readhttp://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10467112-37.html
Avoid the Warm Reboot- What would you do if your computer crashes or appears to be crashing? Do you hold the power button forcing it to reboot? Hopefully not. Do you Force Quit the application? Perhaps. Are there other considerations to make? Start by taking a deep breath and not panicking. Carefully, determine the source of the alleged crash. Are you on the Internet? If you are on the Internet, wait one moment. Perhaps the computer is responding slowly to a media rich web site. Usually, patience with the web site will resolve that problem. If the application is still not responsive, try holding down the Control Key down and toggling through the applications using the Tab key. (Mac users should hold down the Apple key and toggle through the applications using the Tab key.) If this does not work, one can proceed to Force Quit the application using the Control- Alt-Delete combination for Windows users and Apple-Option-Escape for Mac users. Hopefully, the Force Quitting technique will work. If it does work, do not re-launch the application. Instead, restart the computer as applications that are re-launched after a crash are usually in a volatile state.
Avoid the Cold Reboot!!- A cold reboot occurs when someone pulls the plug out of the computer and plugs it back in. Seriously, didn’t your parents tell you to not play with electricity?
Don’t Yank The Flash Drive- Computer users frequently do not properly remove their flash drive. They tend to yank the drive out and wonder why their files become corrupt.
Back Up Your Work- The cost of portable flash drives continue to drop. With this in mind, get into the habit of backing up your work. If you forgot your flash drive, you can still back up your work using Drop Box. What is Drop Box? Drop Box provides you with a 2 gigabyte web based account for storing your files; free of charge. Drop Box can be accessed athttp://www.dropbox.com.
Purchase a boatload of memory- Whether you purchase a PC or Mac, do not skimp on memory. I usually increase the memory by a factor of 4. For example, nowadays-standard units include 1 GB of memory. Therefore, I recommend 4 GB of memory. This in turn will allow your computer to use real memory as opposed to virtual memory thereby improving your computing experience. This will also assure that your machine will continue to perform well; even in its twilight years.
Use a Powered USB Hub- Thanks to the advent of USB we enjoy peripherals such as printers, scanners, cameras iPods, and other devices that are minimal in its cost. This is made possible by the low power structure inherent in the USB architecture. However, low powered devices are prone to crashing and corruption. If a Flash Drive is connected to a USB powered hub, your flash drive or USB peripheral is far less likely to lose power and become corrupt.
Check your Cable Connections- Sometimes a mouse or keyboard cable becomes loose during active use. It is always worth checking before panicking.
Clean your Peripherals- Over time our computers tends to gather all kinds of dust and gunk that even impact the responsiveness of the optical mouse. So… get a dry cloth and start cleaning!
Limit your Upgrades- As a general rule; it is not a good idea to upgrade your machine’s software more than 2 major versions. If your machine has limited RAM; it is not a good idea to upgrade your machine’s software more than 1 major version. It is also a good idea to check the manufacturers recommendations prior to upgrading software on your machine. For example, my G5 tower from 2003 is running Photoshop CS3, iLife 06, Tiger 10.4.11, and so on. In each case, I did not upgrade any software more than 2 major versions. The notable exception is the Internet browser, iTunes application, and Acrobat Reader. However, I did check hardware and memory requirements prior to installing the software. This in turn has enabled my G5 to continue performing effectively even during its eighth year of service.
Install the Latest Updaters- Software programs like MS Office tend to release updaters on a regular basis that address software bugs and security issues. Needless to say these updaters help improve the computer’s performance.
Shutdown the Computer at Least Once a Week- Regardless of your computer’s age and operating system all computer systems suffer from what is called a “memory leak”. Simply put, as a user opens and closes applications the computer is supposed to return the memory being used. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Computers used for a sustained time leak memory thereby slowing its responsiveness. This holds true for both Mac and Windows machines. That being said, hit the RESTART button.
Computers and Coffee are not a good idea- I think this one is self-explanatory. So… please, have some mercy on your computer.
Provide adequate power to your computer- If you are a teacher in a computer lab and your computers are involuntary powering down its time to examine the wiring in your room and check whether you have too many devices connected to one power source. If the problem still persists, your classroom might need an electrical upgrade.
Don’t Open Strange E-Mails- If you do not know the person, hit DELETE. If the e-mail is titled “Check this Out”, hit DELETE. Even if you know the person, hit DELETE as they probably were scammed with the same e-mail.
Look, before you Install- Most software packages will include a description of hardware requirements as well as a ”Known Software Problems” document. Read this document, it could save you some misery.
Practice Caution with New Technology- New products typically are inundated with hardware problems. For example, the iPhone4 initially had many problems with dropped phone calls. Similarly, iPads still have problems with its printing feature as it only supports select printers. With this in mind, it is always a good idea to wait a minimum of 3 months before buying a new product. Of course if it is a Microsoft product wait 3 years. (just kidding… or maybe not)
Be Careful About What You Download- Simply put, downloading software, media, or documents from an unknown file sharing site is a terrible idea. It is both illegal and an invite to hackers to infect your computer.
Editor’s Note- These are some tips that can promote healthy computing. This is by no means a complete list and with that I encourage to add your own ideas via the comments link below.

Every 2 years my computer crashes and I purchase a new one. I find these tips to keep my computer "healthy" very useful. I am planning on buying a Mac within the next few months, reading the posting on Macs make me feel more secure about investing in this (they ARE expensive!). I never shutdown my computer, because I did not realize it could damage it. I plan on using these tips to ensure my next computer has a long life. I am especially excited to use dropbox to keep my computer memory available.

I think buying a mac is the first step. Not having to worry about viruses is so much less stressful. I just think some people (including myself) are scared of learning a whole new operating system. I haven't bought a mac, because I've always used a PC and was never forced to learn how to use a mac until this class.
I also like how you say to use dropbox. I'm glad you had us download it on our personal computers and I'm looking forward to using it this entire upcoming school year.
All of these tips are very important for students and adults. Kids and adults should know not to yank the usb out of the computer, to shut down your computer once a week and all of these other tips.

Computer can be so tricky. If you don't know the tricks to fix it or get through some trouble, you are lost. What to do when computer are "stuck" and you are unable to get out of it? If it is frozen and you tried everything, just pull the cord. I have done that.
So, thank you for the tips. I did just heard about force quit from my daughter. I do have lots to learn!
Whenever I get messages about upgrades, I am never sure which way to go. Do I upgrade or not? That is something to look into to and record when and what I upgrade.
Be careful what you download is true. Every time my son goes on a computer he tries to download a game. He thinks, hey it's just a game what could go wrong! But it does.

I had a Mac way back when from my freshman year at Cornell. Back then, it was just about all Cornell used. I’m not sure about now. I liked my Mac. Matter of fact I still have it. I called Kinko’s up a while back to see if they might be able to help me get my old files off of the hard drive. They said that they could but I haven’t gotten a chance to go there yet.
I appreciate the advice about not forcing a warm or cold reboot. I will take the suggestions to be patient and, if necessary, to “proceed to the Force Quit.”
I’ve been told before that I should back up my computer (I have a PC now) on an external hard drive. I haven’t gotten a chance to do that yet either. I do email my assignments to myself periodically in case something happens while I’m working on them.
I just learned about www.dropbox.com this summer and I think that it’s a very good idea. However, I wasn’t aware of memory leaks and will definitely shutdown my computer at least once a week. I really appreciate all of these ideas for “healthy computing” and I will keep them in mind.
As a mac user, lover, and advocate, I can completely agree with many points made in this article (especially those that are pro-mac). In fact, this article provided me with a few good additional pointers that I will use when operating and caring for my macbook pro. Another thing mentioned in this post was dropbox. I was thrilled to learn about this form of file storage. There have been so many times when I have forgotten my flash drive or have experienced difficulties with it, and this program is a life saver! It could not be easier or more convenient either! I have also learned to practice caution with new technology..you are right about that! I knew I wanted the iPad when it was announced by Apple, however I forced myself to wait a few months before purchasing it. I have been warned in the past to give new technologies a little time to work out their bugs. It certainly was well worth the wait.. another mac product I love and enjoy! I will definitely visit this article again to remind myself of the proper care for my laptop.

After I read this article and recently gained more knowledge using a Mac, I regretted that I bought Toshiba Laptop computer a few month ago. I just wish that I could go back in time to exchange my PC to Mac. I agree with the article, “Be Careful about What You Download”. With my old PC, my 7 years old daughter used to beg me to download a game or two. After the download, my computer started to act funny. This experience taught me to be very careful to download any programs.

These are all great tips to keep your computer healthy. Some of these ideas may seem like common sense, but we don’t actually put them to use, like cleaning the mouse… instead of taking a cloth and dusting it, I just bang on the mouse a little harder. I knew that it’s not good to shut down the computer by pressing the power button, but I did not know that it’s good to turn off the computer once a week. My desktop computer at home is on 24/7. Backing up your work with a flash drive or with drop box is also very important! A few years ago, my PC completely crashed and I could not turn it on. Lucky for me, my cousin is great with computers and was able to retrieve all of my documents! Finally, I did hear that Macs are much better than PCs. They are less susceptible to viruses, which allow them to outlive PCs. I am very comfortable using the Windows Operating System, I think it would be difficult to switch to a new Operating System. However, everyone whom I know that switched to a Mac are very happy and would never go back to using a PC. So, I am actually considering getting a Mac as my next computer.

I wish I would have known this information before. Sadly I have done some damaging things to my computer out of ignorance. I am guilty of warm rebooting my laptop when it becomes unresponsive, and let's not even talk about yanking my flash drives. This information is very useful and I will take heed to it to keep my computer healthy.

I must admit that before taking this course I was very unfamiliar with a Mac. I believe that the next computer that I purchase will be a Mac. With the cost of ownership being lower than that of a PC it seems that it is the smarter route.

I've broken about all of these rules. Ooops!
This explains why my computer messes up after approximately two years every time I purchased it. In fact, I just learned how to safely pull out a USB and to not reboot a computer.
The only thing I can give myself kudos for is practicing safe downloading. But thanks for these tips. They will come in handy when teaching my students proper protocol.

Computers are expensive, and with all big purchases we want to protect our investment. This is not difficult to keep your computer healthy, if you know how. I did hear before that maintaining a computer involves things like keeping it physically clean and protecting from malware, but this article gave me very important tips I never heard before.
Thatnk you.
This blog was incredibly useful. Being a MAC owner sometimes forget to follow some of these rules since I know how well and long their life expectancy are. For example I almost never power down my laptop. I usually just shut the screen and leave it for the next day. Gonna have to be more carful with that in the future lol
I also didn't know about the waiting a moment while on the internet incase your computer is responding slowly to a webpage. From time to time my laptop will do that and almost give me a heart attack but now I know that it's probably just the web pages I'm on! Very good to know.
Thanks for the tips! I think this is a good blog post to spread around since a lot of people have similar questions on how to keep their computers working.

This article was very helpful, I find myself rebooting my laptop when it is slow or freezes. I also sometimes lose patients and just close the laptop by pressing on the power button. The information was useful and will have me think twice before closing my laptop by pressing the power button. I also have a mac laptop and I have had for 3 years now with no complain. I will have to learn to be more patient when computer slows down.

It is imperative to be aware of how the computer should be used, especially with the rapid change in technology today. The tips or guidelines given in your article are very informative and useful. I have indeed encountered some of those problems mentioned in the article.
A person should be given great advise when purchasing or using the computer. This will minimize the glitches if or when they occur.
Hence, it is necessary as a user to become knowledgeable by reading the pros and cons of how to monitor the use of your computer. When this is done you are better equipped to deal with non responsive, crashing or any other problem.

This blog couldn't be more true!Nothing is more frustrating than a computer that is constantly having issues. I worked on a regular PC for years and couldn't even tell you the amount of headaches it had caused. I have been a MAC user for about 8 years and couldn't be happier. No issues at all, except for a dead battery on a five year old laptop.
This blog post was definitely extremely helpful for me. I have to admit, I am guilty of doing many of the "wrong" things listed above. I do not shut my computer down as often as I should, I hold down the "apple" and shut down the computer the wrong way when my computer freezes, etc. I definitely agree and feel that Mac is the way to go. I used to own a DELL and had nothing but trouble. Yes it is definitely more pricey but in the end it is definitely worth the hassle.

For most of my life I always had a PC and was very reluctant to purchase a MAC. I always thought that it was a strange operating system and I would be lost and unaware how to do things on it. About 4 years ago I finally broke down and bought a MAC and I can safely say I will never purchase another PC again. I really do enjoy using my MAC but it can be annoying because not all programs are MAC friendly but overall it is definitely worth it.
Two years ago I brought an HP computer with window 8. I thought I was getting the best of both world. unfortunately my computer keeps experiencing viruses and at times it would work slow.
I wish I knew all these computer tips before I purchased the HP computer. I think it would be better purchasing a MAC.
One fault that i use to do is pull out my flash drive without doing it correctly and then wonder "where is my work?" this article has all important tips all computer users need to know.
I am a proud owner of MAC. Although I am use to a PC and the standard Windows program, I find my MAC to be quicker and have a lot more useful features compared to a PC computer. I value the tips you posted and agree that a MAC is a valuable purchase.
I find this post very "useful" because I am someone who is not lucky with my computers. I have always used a DELL laptop, until I noticed how much money I was throwing away. Each year my laptop breaks down, and I am left to spend hundreds of dollars to fix it. Only until last year did I invest in an MacBook and I am extremely happy. I treat my laptop like the treasure it is. These tips will be very helpful for me to continue taking care of my laptop.
This article was extremely informative and will be certainly useful in my near future. I, all to often, am one of those that tend to lose my patience when my computer isn't responding as I'd like it to. I will keep in mind these helpful tips, as I use my MAC every day to create my lesson plans, power-point presentations, and work sheets.
My computer has crashed on more then one occasion. I personally DO NOT like Mac's, it has nothing to do with the money. The only think I use my computer for is school. Yes; I have some pictures and songs but for the most part all saved files on my computer is school related. I don't open spam mail or strange e-mails. I haven't downloaded anything to my computer aside from iTunes and that was when I first got my new computer after the last one crashed. I try to stay on top of my virus protection and make sure I do routine scans and updates. Computers can be very complicated and I think if your going to use it a lot you should definitely make sure you buy a quality product.
Maia Matcharashvili EDSE 650 This article has very useful information. I always have problems with my computer, specially when my son goes to the computer. I just purchased Mac, so hope I will take a good care of it after reading this article.
As a mac owner I am happy, beacuse computers can be tricky and expensive. Dealing with viruses and crashes can be so annoying and time consuming. So having a good computer and also knowing your way around computers are important. And im little computer savvy but this article gave me tips that i sure can use in the future.

After reading this article, I believe that it is important that you take good care of your laptop to keep it working well. If you take care of your laptop it will last longer and require less maintenance. One of the most important things is having antivirus software available. It is the best defense against a virus. Even if you know what you download, it could still contain a virus. If you choose not to have antivirus software you run the risk of a circuit error or software problem in your system. The virus may slow down the system operations and performance. From my own personal experiences, take my advice do not go without antivirus software. My software expired once and I caught a bad virus and spent lots of money to get rid of it from my computer. Has this ever happened to you?
I have broken all of these rules. No wonder my computers do not last more than 2 years. I never knew that these things can harm your computer.
Rodney Knight EDSE 650
I think this article is very persuasive in regards to the benefits of owning a MAC and the importance of maintaining a computer. For me personally I wasn't aware of Software programs like MS Office and how they address software bugs and security issues. In which, I have had my share of experience with in the past. This article have open my eye's on how I can help improve my computer's performance in many different ways. Thank You.
Great article! I definitely needed this refresher on how to take care of my most prized possession for GRAD school, because its nothing like your pc "going down" in the middle of a 20 page paper.
I must say that protecting my computer has always been at the bottom of my list of priorities. I never wanted to shell out the money to update my virus protection. That is, until a couple of viruses and crashes later. My wife and I share a computer and both have a very large amount of school work on the hard drive. Losing this laptop would be devastating. We finally invested in a mac and could not be happier. However, you also opened my eyes to a number of different strategies I could use to make sure that my new laptop lasts for as long as possible.
After reading this article, I was happy to learn that a MAC is the best choice. I happen to agree. After going through many PCs, each of which lasted only a couple of years, my family decided to invest in a MAC. My MAC has little difficulties and when it does, I go right to MAC where they fix it instantly.
I also found helpful the problem with yanking out a flash drive. I am certainly guilty of this and will begin properly ejecting the device to prevent future problems.

After reading this article I would have to agree that Mac is one of the better computer options. I have my iPhone and iPad all linked to my computer, this helps me tremendously. I can sadly say I use to be one of those people that often complained about their computer. Since switching brands I have had no trouble. This article is great because I learned a bunch of useful tips that I was completely unaware of before hand.
I wish someone would have told me years ago about a MAC computer. We lost 4 lab tops during Hurricane Sandy and had to repurchase a computer ASAP. I decided at this time to look at MAC's. I knew the computer was extremely costly and was not sure if I wanted to spend this amount of money. We decided as a family to purchase a MAC Notebook and pool our money together. This has been the best computer purchase we ever made. We LOVE our MAC...It Never Fails Us. Today, I must say we are the proud owner of 5 MAC Notebooks and we never have to worry about viruses or the computer shutting down on us. As for the other information you included in this blog. I personally find it useful, it has enlightened me on how to properly handle the glitches my computer may face in the future.

Such good information given in this blog. I can't tell you how many times I get frustrated when my computer crashes and unfortunately it happens all too often! I know a mac computer is the way to go in order to have less headaches. I'm going to start saving my loose change now and save up some money!
Everything written in this blog I can relate to myself. There is nothing more frustrating than dealing with a computer that constantly gives you problems. I've come to learn that a Mac computer seems to have less problems than a regular PC.
I've also dealt with a lot of issues when it comes to downloading things off of the internet. I sometimes forget to update my virus software which can allow new malware onto my computer.
Thank you for sharing this article. It contains very useful information that everybody should keep in mind when using computer, specially nowadays when technology takes a big part in peoples lives.
I am in the market for a new computer for myself. I was thinking about purchasing a PC. After reading this article, I am going to be purchasing a MAC. I have been having trouble with my home PC now because of all the pop-ups. This information was very informative and useful.
Also, I will continue to always take out my flash drive in the correct manner.
This is an interesting and timely information. I have had and currently have problems with my computers. It is constantly being attacked by viruses, it asks me to back up my files, and often reminds me of my battery life. I intend to save and share this information and most importantly to by myself a Mac computer, I believe that it is a wise decision to make.
The article contained very useful information. Preventive maintenance saves money by reducing or eliminating expensive repairs and replacements. In addition, it makes a system more reliable and reduces the downtime required for repair or replacement. These are definitely things to keep in mind since technology is an important part of our lives. I use drop box to back up my files and pictures. Also, I need to start turning off my computer verse to put it on sleep.
It is very important to know how the computer should be used to be healthy. This article includes very important information to keep my computer working properly. I regret I didn't use all these advises before. That's why I used to have problems with my computer. After I've read this article I'll try to follow all necessary steps to keep my computer healthy.Thank you for this incredible useful information.
I purchased a Mac for my daughter about 4 years ago and then purchased a Mac for my son about 2 years ago. They constantly raved about it so this year I finally broke down and bought myself a Mac and I couldn't be happier. I find that tasks that took multiple steps with my old computer now take just one step with the Mac. I feel Mac computers should be in every school.
This article includes many great tips for keeping our computer healthy. Some of them I knew before but some are really new for me.I wish I would have known this information before.Unfortunately, I have done a lot of mistakes using my PC. The information which I got from the article is incredible useful. So after reading it I will try to follow all advises to protect my computer from damaging.
I bought my daughter a Mac book a few years ago and she loved it. I then bought a Mac book for my son and the two of them kept telling me I need to buy one for myself. I finally bought one and I love it. I haven't had any problems and I find that it is easier to use and there are less steps when using Mac applications. I wish I had them in the school I work in.
Today technology takes a big part in people’s lives. The information and some very useful tips in the article are very useful and actual. Honestly, I would have never thought that MAC computers’ warranty services are higher. Thank you for such amount of information about how to maintain our computers and prolonging computer’s life.
This blog post was very informative and useful. I never really gave a second thought to using a warm reboot when my computer freezes so it's good to know that this is not a solution and I will try to avoid it at all costs. I also never really gave a thought to removing my flash drive before actually ejecting it from the computer. This is another thing I need to make sure I don't do. My mother and my grandmother both have laptops and they're always asking me for help. I've noticed that something they never do is update their computer. They never install the windows updates, they never update their virus scanner or actually run a virus scan. I've also noticed that they don't defragment and they don't clean out their files, such as emptying the recycle bin and deleting temporary files, etc. In my opinion, these things are very important when it comes to maintaining your computer. Lastly, I've been thinking about buying a Mac more and more. Even though they're expensive, I've never had a problem with using them. My only reservation is that some games, etc. are not made with a version that works for Mac computers, otherwise I'd buy one right away.

As a child I remember hearing the saying: "prevention is better than cure." And the article above for some reason reminds me of that saying. It is very informative on methods to reduce the risk of your computer crashing which is limited to the information out there that focuses more on the "cure" in other words what to do after your computer crashes on you.
This article was was very informative. I have a toshiba laptop and I couldn't log into nay of my email accounts. I don't know what happen to it. I might have to purchase a MAC
For me as a beginner of studying of Computer technology in Education this article is very informative as all the other articles that Professor Gutnicki
had published in his Blogs. I would like to thank him for his articles.
It is really imperative to to be aware of how the computer should be used.
A person should be given a great advise when purchasing or using the computer.

To build on top of that, teacher should always have a laptopfan. Many of my colleagues burned their CPUs since they left their computers on for the entire day. Moreover, teachers should always have anti-virus programs installed in their computers.
Quot Faih Lei Cheng EDSE 650
I think a teacher should always have a laptop- fan and an antivirus software ready in the laptop. Many of my colleagues messed up their computers for leaving them on for the entire day. Moreover, antivirus can usually prevent 70% of the recent trojan horses and viruses.
Computer at home is a part of our everyday life, it is a part of the family. I personally treat my PC, laptops, and a tablet as a crystal vase, a vulnerable object. I have a good amount of real and virtual memory on my computer, so I can run some favorite video games with a regular speed and loading. The pieces of advice that I have read in the article are very thoughtful and I follow most of them such as safety with uploading unknown programs, ejecting a flash drive, deleting unknown messages, etc. This is just as easy as following the strategies of washing hands.
This article was very informative, I have had my hp computer for about seven years and it has been serviced 3 times because of major issues and I've had to buy 2 batteries. I have a level of affection because it was a graduation gift from my older sister when I was entering collage. I believe that in about 2 years I will be buying another laptop. And I have already decided to switch to apple. Everyone I know has a mac/Ipad/Iphone and the ease of an all apple system intrigues me tremendously. Nevertheless, I will use this advice for the next 2 years that I continue to struggle with my hp.

I was not aware of these facts. I found this article to be informative. Great tips that I will follow
I think this is very useful to know. It is a very interesting article and explains everything a person should know to save their computer. I have a MAC and did not know many of the things about it that I learned from reading this article. Thank you
Generally, I follow all of theses rules except the software update piece. It does make perfect sense not to lose memory over unnecessary upgrades. Generally my computers have been good to me. My last laptop (PC) later 4 years and still works actually. The information presented in the blog should be shared with new and veteran computer users alike.

As I've gone through quite a few laptops already, I always invest in the best malware software for defense just in case of anything.
I usually defrag my hard drive on a regular basis and delete unwanted files. As long as you keep a close eye on things and don't download anything stupid like free movies, you should be fine.

all of these tips are very useful and i think that they will definitely preserve your computer. I will definitely think twice about holding down the power button when my computer isn't working now! I agree that the fist step is to get a mac. I have a mac laptop and desktop and I am very happy with both.
This article was really interesting. I have to say that buying a Mac has changed my life, and for the better that is. It is a lot more easier to use and I haven't had any problems with it since I have gotten it three years ago, unlike my previous computers in the past. The mac may be costly but it is certainly worth the buy. I will definitely take these tools into consideration, and hopefully I can continue to use my mac for much longer.
I do agree with the article. Even though a Mac is expensive, it is worth paying for. I learned it the hard way. My brother and I purchased our computers on the same date. He purchased a Mac and I purchased an HP, thinking that the Mac was too expensive to afford. He still has his Mac while my family has been through 3 computers. On the long run, I have paid more than he did buying all those computers. I finally purchased my Mac two months ago with some financial help and I am so glad I did.

I currently do not have a computer. The last one I had died somehow and I have been debating what to get next. after reading this article, I am considering purchasing a MAC, it seems as though it is the best choice for me economically.
these tips are so helpful and I believe lots of people come across these very common issues. one helpful tip is if water or any liquid has spilled on your device, it is advisable not to turn on your computer. Let it dry!!! and maybe its not best to put a hair dryer directly on it. Also, from time to time, I think its best to open the base of the computer and clean it for dust which can make the machine perform better.
You would think that most of these hints would be common knowledge to users by now but I know first hand that they are not. I cannot tell you how often I have to tell my mother that she needs to upgrade her storage! As far as the Mac vs. PC debate, I must say that I was a long time devotee to PCs. I finally broke down and bought a Mac about 4 years ago and I cannot be happier with it. With some standard updating and maintenance my IMac is running as well today as it did when I purchased it. I also love all the multimedia software that comes with apple products. I don't think I will be going back to PC anytime soon.
THis is great advice, but I love my Dell computer. I'm sure a Mac pc is great but believe if people follow the examples that was given all brand computers could last Long.

These are some very good tips. I did take the first tip and buy a mac and at the moment I am still on the fence about that purchase. I like the fact that they last longer and do not get viruses but at the same time I am very some difficulties converting for a Pc to a Mac. I am becoming very frustrated especially when trying to use Word/Pages or PowerPoint/KeyNote. Hopefully I will get use to it soon or I may turn to the PC. I will also definitely take the other tips into consideration especially the not downloading a lot of programs on the computer. This will definitely make your computer slower and that's not a good thing.
There is nothing more frustrating about computer viruses, especially when you are working on important school work and your computer freezes or deletes your work! These tips are extremely informative and useful because I never even thought that there would be away to prevent these things or fix them without professional help. If you invest in a computer or device you know that it is expensive and its good to know all the things that will help you keep it running for as long as possible.

This article was very useful. I already have a Mac, and also can agree that it works better and longer than a PC. I use Quit Safari button when needed, and it is very helpful.
The information about Updates is a bit confusing. Have to work on it!
This information that sometimes we forget because we could be in a hurry or we are not thinking about it at the time. But this is super helpful to remind us how to keep our computer healthy.
This article is particularly useful in this time of spam and Trojan horses. Very good tips and easy ways to fix problems rather than create more. I particularly agree with the original suggestion of getting a Mac. Since I switched to Mac nearly 5 years ago I have experienced none of the former problems related to owning a PC and the extra cost has paid off ten fold in introspection.

This article is filled with useful information for people who are not familiar with the Do's and Don'ts of computers. I have to agree with buy a mac. I was the owner of a PC computer and it was horrible. Everyday I was having a new problem, the pc was so slow, it would crash and I would lose my work. Another reason I love the MAC because when you do have trouble, which is rare, it is easy to get help, whereas with PCs a lot of the time you are on the phone with someone attempting to help you usually in another country and it does not help. I always have shut my computer off the correct way and never have forced a shut down until it is the last resort. I am a firm believer in using a back up whether hard drive, or flash drive. I am a big picture taker and I have everything backed up always.
This was a very useful and informative article. There were many things which I was not aware of so I am grateful for this information. Technology is constantly changing and we must be aware of how to properly take care of our devices.

This article is very useful for people who may not know these little tips. Most of the time, you are not told how to correctly restart or remove your flash drive. Knowing these tips can increase the life of your computer and save you money. I agree with buying a Mac computer as a start to having your computer last longer. I have had my Mac computer for almost 6 years and it still works very well. Although at first the cost may scare you, it is well worth the costly purchase.

I also haven't updated my Mac in years. The message always comes up to update and I always click "Remind me later", just because I'm usually working on something and I don't want to interrupt it with a computer restart. I found this article to be very relatable. For many years I owned a PC and after about 3 years a virus would happen and my computer would crash. Finally, after deciding on not to waste my money, I bought a Mac. I knew it was going to be expensive but I felt owning a PC I was just throwing my money out the window after 3-4 years. I'm not on to my second year of owning a Mac and have yet to have one problem with it. However, I'm still learning certain parts of using a Mac since it is a bit different then a PC.

Although this is excellent advice to help prolong the life of your computer. I also can't help to think that many times these machines are truly not built to last for long periods of time. "You get what you pay for" is really a good saying to address this issue. Even when taking optimal care of your computer sometimes the hardware and software is just not durable enough to stand the test of time. These companies (much like other consumer products) do not want you to buy only one product for the duration of your lifetime. They want you to invest in more products every couple of years. I feel like the average manageable life span of a CPU these days is about 5 years. If you follow the above said advice, hopefully your CPU will get about 5 years of strong use out of it.

I found this article to be very informative and interesting. I use a Mac computer at home and sometimes I encounter some of these issues. I especially am not very confident using computers and I start to panic when something goes wrong. If the computer gets frozen I just turn it off without saving any of my data. Needless to say I have lost a lot of papers by doing this. I have never used drop box before and now I know how to use it. This blog was very useful. Most of the time computers freeze and your most important documents seem to get lost. However, knowing the steps to take to avoid this happening is crucial in our technology savvy world. The most valuable part of this article was to " not panic, and take a deep breath". Usually, the first thing a person does is panic! This leads to not knowing what to do next.
As a Mac owner, I have yet to have any problems relating to virus or crashing. I believe Mac is user friendly and worth every cent.
This article is very informational and helpful to those that tend to have computer issues and are inexperienced with what to do to troubleshoot them. I know in my own personal experience, I had an HP laptop for about 6 years, and I slowly started to notice issues with it and would have to ensure I had some kind of protection on it and would scan the computer as viruses are very common with these computers. Unfortunately, I noticed bad habits on my own part that I would do (consistently leaving the computer on, constantly charging it). Now that I have a mac laptop, things are completely different. Not that I did not enjoy my pc, but it is a good point to make that these mac computers are less prone to viruses. I also ensure that I shut down my computer and only charge it when necessary, as overcharging can cause battery issues.

I found this entry about keeping your computer "healthy" very useful. I myself, have always been a "Mac person" and found Macs to be a little intimidating at first but always much easier and accessible than a PC. I did not know that macs generally outlive their PC counterparts by a ratio of 3:1. With that said, I'm not shocked to hear that either.

This article gives great insight on technology. I have purchased about 2 years ago and it has been working well. However, macs are not as susceptible to viruses as PCs because of the internet system. Safari doesn't open as many websites and can detect which websites are not good for this computer. This method isn't always helpful. For example safari limits my Touro Tc web account which forces me to download a different web browser. Mac and Pc have their strengths and weaknesses. As a result, people should find a way to test out both operating systems and see which one they may prefer.
These are very helpful tips. However, now a days there are Mac computers that allow you to not have to go through the hassle of viruses. Also, we now save our work through web based systems like google. Technology is updating so that we can avoid problems like these, although some problems like these do occur.

Thanks for your the the tips. As someone who is not tech savvy, I am constantly changing my laptops every two years. These tips can save me money by extending the life of pc. I just brought my surface pro a couple of months and I already had to warm reboot it several time. But I won't be doing that anymore.
The reason I am hesitant to get a mac (besides the price)is because I always hard they were difficult to navigate. I think it will be difficult to make the switch from windows to new operating system. But I think my next computer purchase will be a Mac.

this article was ver7y helpful and reasonable to me. lot of times I get confuse when my computer crash or slow down for no reason. when I read this article made me realize that I do most of the things that mentioned in the article t5o not do. For example, I shut off my computer most of the time without closing out all the app the proper way or by holding the power key until it shut down. also I don't wait until it charge completely and plug it back weaver I want. I found all these techniques very helpful to keep my computer well to use. thank you.
This was a great blog! I have been shutting down my computer now at work (which is a dell), once a week, and notice a much faster response. I agree with what you aid Professor about the Mac. It is to your advantage if you can buy a Mac. They do last longer and have less virus'. As opposed to buying one for less, look it as a life-long investment as you mentioned. I love my Mac and have had apple software for years now...
This article is very informative. I, myself have been a lifelong mac user simply for the fact that it does not get viruses. However, I have always been told contradicting information about whether or not you should shut your computer off or simply let it "sleep" when you are not using. I am 100% guilty of not being careful when removing the USB from my laptop. Back in 2010, I discovered a MacBook would be a great laptop to invest in. I also figured it would be of great use to have a reliable laptop for my upcoming freshman year in college. However, I was unaware of these little care tips mentioned in the article above. In 2015, I was completely shocked when my MacBook broke down. I was angry knowing that I spent so much money for only 5 years of use. I purchased a new MacBook immediately because I was in the middle of my first semester in grad school. This time, I am much more careful with my downloads and my overall care for my laptop. Being that this piece of technology has such an important role in my everyday life, I make sure I follow the tips listed above for a longer laptop lifespan. Another tip that I can add to this discussion is, TURN YOUR LAPTOP OFF WHEN YOU ARE NOT USING IT.
This was a great article!
I agree with your statement in reference to buying a Mac verses a PC. Although most people frown to this because of the cost, it is worth it in the end. All the money spent on purchasing PCs (since they crash in about 2-3 years) can easily be put toward purchasing a Mac. I have had my Mac for the past 4 years and have never looked back!

Working in a modern era public school gives me the opportunity to be more exposed to IWB's. I believe that providing these schools with IWB is worth the expense. Many teachers use IWB's by showing visuals. I really like the IWB because it gives the children the ability to express themselves through participation by playing games and working on worksheets. I believe that the IWB has made life a bit easier for both teachers and students in the modern era.

This article brought up many good points such as backing up your work and hoe Macs can be very efficient computers. Being a Mac owner myself, I absolutely love their computers and I love that any time that there is an issue with my laptop I can simply make an apt and go to the apple store where my issue will be resolved. I am not sure if Microsoft, or dell computers offer similar services as this, but this is something that I consider to be essential. Another good point is to always back up your work, unfortunately no matter how well your computer works, crashes can occur. I myself have been guilty of not backing up and loosing much of work, and it is no fun picnic. I too would recommend to often back it up to a usb drive or if there isn't none available emailing yourself can always be an good alternative .

This article is very informative. I have both a mac and a regular PC. I prefer using the MAC because it works faster, it is less prone to receiving viruses and doesn't break down as often. When my computer freezes I tend to shut it down by holding the power button. Now, I'll be more conscious to when the computer freezes and just give it a minute and let it process through on it's own.
I found this article to be very informative. I personally don't consider myself to be very technologically savvy, in fact I am probably quite the opposite. If something goes wrong with my computer I usually have no idea how it happened or how to fix it. When you think you've heard and/or seen it all something seems to amaze you even more. The article was informative and I truly believe holds truth towards Macs and other operating systems. I became a big fan of Mac for a variety of reasons: one being that it is not suppose to get viruses. Being the over protected type I of course purchased an anti-virus anyway for my Mac Book Pro and every year I renew it just in case. As mentioned in the article Macs are very costly so therefore I would rather over-protect it. As far as memory, I always think it is a good idea to back up work on a flash drive and email it to yourself as a sense of security. I have all my work saved on a flash drive purposely so I don't fill up all of the memory on the laptop. Something I did take away from this article was to shut down the computer at least once a week as I just leave it hibernating as well as warm and cold reboot.

Growing up at home we always had Microsoft computers. At that time we did not know about Macs. I learned to use computers solely through Microsoft. Eventually, as I got older, I bought myself a Mac laptop. I have to say although this article is very informative in regards to Macs and PCs, I will probably never purchase another PC. The reason why I will always choose a mac over a pc is simply because of the amount of viruses I always had with my pc. I have been a mac owner for almost 4 years now and I have not once received a virus. All the tips here will help me in the future when and if my computer begins to crash on me.

First off I just want to say that I completely agree with you in regards to investing and purchasing a Mac- it is so worth it. I also agree with USB drives going less in price you always have save, save, save it’s very important. This article contains a lot of useful information that most, like myself, tend not to know when dealing with computers. Contrary to this article, I have heard that Mac/ Apple computers are not what they are cracked up to be. I recently purchased a laptop for my professional and personal use through Best Buy. Having help from numerous Geek Squad professionals, they all mentioned that although a Mac is less susceptible to viruses, etc. their interior make-up is not as advanced as P.C. But, I will admit that Mac’s have less “kinks” to work out regarding to a P.C. freezing or crashing.
This article was very informative. I have always known that Mac was a good computer, but I did not know how good it is compared to a PC. I also feel that this is the problem with technology and one of the down falls. As great as computers are, like most things in life they wind up breaking down or causing problems, but it becomes costly and it is not clear to the average person. It can become complicated and crucial when you ave a deadline to meet, or a paper to submit etc. With these glitches and mistakes, thankfully there are some helpful hints and solutions.

As of recently, i am also looking to purchase a new laptop and will consider many of the tips presented within the article. I always hear "MAc is the best", now it is confirmed that MAC outlives PC by a ratio of 3:1 and does not fall victim to trojan horses or maleware. I am grateful to now understand how much memory is a sufficient amount to purchase because this is a trouble I always run into. I agree with most of the advice listed on the blog, however I disagree that a Mac needs to be bought. Mac's are not as great as most people make them out to be. Like many people getting a MAC may not be the first thing on everyone's list so seeing a list like this makes for a interesting article. Out of all the tips on the list, the two that stand out to me are(maybe because I have broken these the most): "Limiting your Upgrade" and "Shutdown the Computer at Least Once A Week". Several of my old computers (my last laptop actually) broke down while it was in the process of being upgraded. The other tip, I find myself logging out and closing the laptop rather then actually doing a shutdown.
The article had a lot of informative as well as important information. I purchased my son a Toshiba laptop 2 Christmases ago. Of course his first venture was to connect his phone to the laptop and download music causing it to be vulnerable to viruses and pop ups. I had the bad habit of open windows and forgetting to close them as well as logging into sites, forgetting to sign out as well as not ejecting the. This article made me aware of the various things done wrong, that caused damage to the Toshiba. The next PC I purchase will definitely be a MAC, but for now, I'll try to stretch the longevity of the PC I currently own by following these eighteen steps to promote a healthy life for my computer.

Years ago, I used a PC. I was constantly having trouble with my computer and found myself frequently purchasing a new laptop by the time "black Friday" rolled around. After realizing my sisters MacBook never had any issues, I finally made the jump. I bought my own MacBook and haven't had any issues since (knock on wood)! Unfortunately, I find myself guilty of doing some of the major no-no's you have listed above. I found many of your tips helpful and will try to never do the "cold reboot" again!

I am like most people I do prefer the mac over other various options. I had recently had to purchase a hard drive for my mac because after 6 years my mac crashed and I was forced to either by a new hard drive and see how it works or spend another 1000 dollars on a MacBook which I preferred not to do. So after purchasing the new hard drive for 75 dollars my mac is working great and some of these new tips will be extremely helpful.
As i read this article I must be honest and admit that I am guilty of almost all of the "dont's " on this list. The biggest thing I took away from this was that shutting down your computer is essential to the long lasting health of your computer. I myself may go weeks without shutting down my computer and i do notice that certain applications do go a lot slower than they used to.

Once I have completely read this article and gained a better understanding of how to use a Mac, I immediately disliked my choice in purchasing a brand new dell laptop. With that being said, I would have loved to have read this before my purchase and realize the great offers a Mac has to offer. It has gone to show me how careful you need to be when downloading certain software's or programs for that matter.

I agree with the first step "buy a mac." Since I switched from a PC to a Mac I havent had many issues. My first Mac laptop ran smoothly for 7 years until numerous batteries burnt out and the outside shell physically began to break. Another good point that was made in this article is to avoid making more than one or two upgrades- this definitely will slow an older computer down. These tips will help anyone get the most out of any computer
Having grown up in a house that always has used PC and now owning an Apple, I can see a big difference in the performance and prolonged value of an Apple. I tend to loose patients when my PC crashed or takes too long and I've also been guilty of shutting down improperly.
This really is a great blog on how to keep your computer healthy. Far too often my computers have needed extra care and love but I didn't know the best process to help improve it's life/performance.

This article as very informative because often times we have no idea what's going on with our computers. Often, I find myself doing the warm reboot, instead of simply giving it some time. The misconception is that if I shut the computer off quick enough, if I am getting a Trojan, I can interrupt it from taking over my computer. One thing the article suggest is to buy a whole lot of storage. I can definitely agree with this. It wasn't until I became an Apple user, I began to understand the importance of memory. Full computers run slow, so the more memory your computer has the more things you can save. It is extremely important you take in consideration the type of person you are. For example, if you love film and photography, you should consider getting more memory than the average person. the biggest thing is to be careful what you click on. I find it that children click on a lot of this appealing to their eye. A good idea is to limit their pop-ups to ensure they don't accidently click on a Trojan.

This article was useful in understanding how to keep your computer healthy. I have crashed more computers than I am proud of, and never really understood why. I realize after reading this article there are so many simple ways to avoid computer issues long term that I have not been doing. As computers are becoming part of daily lessons and necessary parts of life, it's so important to take good care of it to avoid future problems.
Wow this was a great blog post! I have a 6 year old Acer... now I'm wishing I bought a Mac because of the virus problem... I also wish I bought more gig! This article had some great tips I'm going to try not do to any forced restarts again in the future!

This article is helpful to those who struggle with computer safety and longevity. Many people who use computers do not understand how they actually work and function, so when a problem occurs, they panic. I think that this article outlines what people should and should not do in these situations very well. One of the most important things mentioned it backing up your work on an external hard drive or drop box. This way if something were to happen to your computer, you would still have access to your files and documents. I remember losing a 15 page-paper because of a computer crash and after that, I always back up my work no matter what. It is also a good idea to be cautious when opening e-mail. If something seems strange, it probably is. I always find it interesting when people say that Macs outlive PCs. While, it may be true, I think it all goes back to the user/users. I know people who have crashed a Mac just as quickly as they have crashed a PC. Even though I love Apple products and I have an iPhone and an ipad, I don't feel comfortable using a Mac for some reason. I think that it all goes back to understanding how to protect your computer and being very aware of how you use it.
The article was very in formative because I was not knowledgeable about a lot of the information contained in the article about computers. Not knowing this information I helped to ruined a Toshiba laptop that I purchased for my son. Not shutting down the computer properly and leaving searches open and signing our form them caused the computer to get viruses and an overwhelming amount of pop-ups. I am appreciate this information because my son now has an Apple computer and he is afraid of allowing me to use it because he is afraid that I will damage it. I love his Mac I haven't had any problems with viruses even though I still am not such a responsible user. I love him to have it for a longer period of time than he was able to keep the Toshiba
the information in this article was very useful in helping to understand what to do when your computer crashes or has other major problems. i frequently have issues with my laptop and viruses and crashing. the ctrl Atlt delete method helps a lot. all in all i think this was a great article and very detailed explanations on your common issues with computers. I feel the author of this article is very well educated on computers and knows how to explain well what to do.

This article provides a lot of information that we often apply or use in our daily lives. I do agree with a lot of the topics being discussed in this article, especially the one that talks about backing up your data in the USB. Often times you don't realize in a matter of seconds your entire data can be wiped out so it's important for you to backup everything. Apple does supply a great quality and allows you to work with a computer in a simpler manner. It's easier to access and does last longer than other computers. It's interesting to learn that upgrading your computer should be limited to only two updates.
These comments were very informative and written in a manner most can understand. Buying a Mac is a great recommendation, for me I just purchased a new windows computer, so I guess the next time around the Mac will be the preferred choice. I also will not do a cold shut down on any computers.
This article is very informative. As someone who considers herself a technological fossil I am guilty of both cold and hard rebooting. I have no choice but to admit that I unplugged my computer cord many times in the past.Eating cookies and drinking tea while browsing? Yes, this sin has also stained my technological consciousness. As hard as it may be, even technological fossils like myself should at least try to upgrade their technological knowledge from time to time. Besides advancing my skills I can also save myself some money and aggravation.
This article was very informative to me because although i am very knowledgeable about how to use a computer, I am not very very knowledgeable on how to protect and preserve my equipment. I often postpone upgrading programs and often forget to actually upgrade therefore i deal with programs running slow and not knowing why. I too am guilty of not logging off when i am finish using a particular site leaving my information open and available to be hacked. I am also guilting of removing my flash drives without properly ejecting them from computers as well and wondering why the information i thought i saved is not on it and wondering why the i can retrieve any data at all from it. I am so guilty of so many of the wrongdoings that help to destroy my computer. Thank you for this article and for helping me to understand how important those little things i do and do not do can preserve my equipment.

About 12 years ago my laptop crashed. I had no choice but to use my friend’s computer however, it was a MAC and I had no prior knowledge on how to use one. At first I was completely lost and hated using it. Now I will never go back to a Windows PC. I am not great with computers but once you get used to using a MAC they become very easy to navigate. Also, it is very easy to sync all your other devices together when you are using all Apple products. Since having a MAC computer I have never had any of the old problems I used to have with my Windows PC such as crashing or viruses (:::knock on wood:::). I don’t have a ton of memory on my new MacBook Air but I did purchase a portable hard drive that I use for back-up and to hold old documents, videos and pictures. I think this article provided many useful tips to keep your computer properly working. Two pointers that I should practice more of is shutting down my computer and to avoid drinking coffee near it.

This article was extremely informative! I would ever even think that such ideas would have such a major impact on our computers. I am just curious to know what causes a virus? Exactly what is a virus and how does it harm our computer? From where do viruses come? Lastly, are there specific sites that are more prone to cause viruses?
This article was very informative. I like your suggestion on purchasing a Mac. I purchased my first Mac 6 years ago and think it was definitely a great purchase. I didn't have half as many issues I had in the past with a dell computer. Being in the know with how to keep a healthy computer is very important.
Thank you
This article was so informative; I personally have been a MAC owner almost my entire life. I love the fact that they are so easy to use and there are limited virus' that it can get. Of course, I know that you shouldn't open random emails and you shouldn't download anything you think seems sketchy. But, again, not everyone is as informed and it is important to educate those who are prone to getting hacked and not being aware of the dangers of hackers.
This article provides very useful information for those who already own a computer and for those who may be new to technology. It is important for computer users to be aware of these aspects because many computers can run into issues such as not responding or getting a virus. I think that it is important to back up your computer, especially if you use it for work. I back up my computer every time just to be safe. Also, I used to be a culprit of pulling out the flash drive from my computer but I got rid of that habit in order to make sure my information and storage stayed safe. If people abide by these rules and ways to keep your computer healthy, then they will run into less issues and their computers can last much longer.

These steps to keep your computer "healthy" are significant. Many of us don't realize the little things we can do for our computers to keep them in good shape. Technology is such a big part of our lives today so its important that we get our moneys worth and take good care of the technology we use on a daily basis. These are good steps to know because a lot of us, including myself, force the computer to reboot as soon as the device stops working. Given these tips, we can deal with technology in a way that will not ruin our computers/ laptops/ etc. The information provided in this article is valuable especially to anyone who is not tech savvy. We should always keep ourselves up to date with ways to use technology because it is becoming such a big part of our lives.

These tips are really informative and useful on how to avoid destroying your computer. I wish I had access to this article earlier because I have done many of the things listed. I had to spend some money to fix it. At least I'm glad my computer is still alive. I know that it's really frustrating when your computer crashes, next time I'll make sure not force the computer to shut down. I will try to wait a few minutes and see if it will react.

This article is extremely helpful to me. Most of the information mentioned in the article are new to me. The most useful part i learned from the article is the part about avoid the warm reboot. Most of the time when the computer is not responding, i will hold the power button to force the computer to reboot. Now i know this is not a good idea and i can use the control-alt-delete trick to reboot the system. I learned a lot from this article.

This article is very informative to the majority of people who are not tech geeks with technology. I am one of the guilty ones who will shutdown my Macbook because it isn't working or freezing. Through this article i have learned that I shouldn't do that. In addition, I am also guilty of losing work from not backing it up. The article suggests due to common glitches that can occur for various problems whether it's overloading or overheating the laptop, work should always be backed up in order to stay on the safe side.
Although computer users might be better off purchasing an Apple instead of another brand, I still prefer my Dell or hp computer over a Mac. I thought that the author provided a great number of executions in which to help users who are facing difficulties with their computers. There are certain executions in which I have to remember to avoid.
Wow...... I wasn't aware of these facts. When my fist computer crashed I surely pressed hard and held on to the power key (warm reboot) gosh I really didn't know better. The fact is I was unaware that was doing the wrong thing. All 18 points are clear and understandable, I wish someone had explained these points to me earlier. The thing is,I do not know if half the people who use computers really know how to legitimately care for their computers. I hope they get a chance to read this article.

These are some very helpful tips to keep the computer safe and long lasting. I would add in addition to the coffee tip, ALL FOOD should not be eaten near your computer! I have seen people be relentless with their donuts, bagels, sauces, crumbs, and the like around their computer. This will give the computer bugs. And I don't mean invisible ones. Like actual creatures with actual feet. Not to mention damaged hardware and a big yucky mess.
The information included in the article is very valuable, as most people are ignorant when it comes to caring for their computers. I myself have been guilty of many of the don'ts listed when my computer slowed down or froze in the middle of surfing the web or writing a paper. I have learned that impatience with these machines can often times make things worse and in the end become extremely costly. One thing that I don't believe was mentioned when its comes to securing your work in the event of a crash or freeze is to continuously save your work. I've worked on papers for hours and the unforeseeable occurs and all of my hard work is lost. Now, when I'm completing an assignment I try to close all applications that i'm not using and continuously save my work, even if i'm not finished.
This article was very informative. It expanded my technological vocabulary as I didn't know what many of these term were including, warm reboots and cold reboots. It was also informative because now I clearly understand why having a Mac computer is more beneficial. Many of these issues I experience daily, and knowing the information given in this article will help lower the chances of my computer crashing.
Hi, this information is very interesting and helpful for those who are dealing with modern technology.I must admit that I experienced the same issues when I was working with PC. However, a friend of mine recommended me to switch to Mac. Initially, I was skeptical about buying it, however, even though it was expensive,it kind of paid me back. I have been working with Mac for 6 years and I am fully satisfied with all its technical characteristics. Even my entire family switched to Mac.Since that time no viruses, crashes or glitches.

I completely agree with purchasing a Mac. I prefer Mac over PC when it comes to the lifespan of a computer, however, find Windows easier to navigate and use. This information is very useful to someone in the market for an upgrade of their computer, or someone who is not so tech savvy.
This article was extremely helpful. I often experience challenges and difficulties with my work computer, which is slightly outdated. I often try to reboot the computer. Now I know this is the wrong thing to do and can cause more problems. Thanks four your tips!

I recently purchased a MAC laptop, but after I regret it. But after reading this article I definitely think that I choose the right product. I don't know much about how to avoid viruses but in this article I found very useful information that I will always keep in mind. Sometimes I think that always expensive products somehow ends up paying you back, and this article confirms this thought.
ERIKA EDSN 650
I believe in everything this article is saying and it does pay to buy an expensive MAC because its chances to be corrupted is never. There are too many USB Flash Drive that you should never pull out because there is too much damage and corruption. The downloads on the internet are dangerous because they can be fake and filled with virus. I always turn off my computer because leaving it on for too long can damage a non-MAC laptop.
Despite the fact that many believe Macs to be better and more efficient I continue to be a PC user. Yes, Macs cost more and are worth the additional money because there is an alleged less probability of attaining a virus which can cause a crash and loss of data. However, in terms of which is "better" it is merely an opinion. Some would prefer to purchase a PC which can be cheaper and buy a new one more frequently that they would a MAC which may balance the amount of money (spend more initially or spread the same amount of money over time). For those that choose to use a PC there are many options to avoid losing data with a computer crash. The professor mentioned USBs and how people can often loose data if they do not eject properly or if the computer crashes in the middle of using and saving data in the USB. To avoid this, I use google to back up all of my information and transfer it over to my USB or vice versa using one click. This is very convenient and productive. I can save slides (PowerPoint lessons), excel spreadsheets, google docs (Microsoft word) and other such programs that are equally as sufficient as that of the computer but is better because it automatically saves every 2 minutes and can avoid the possibility of losing data. The other benefit is that if you lose or break your USB you have the data at your disposable and easily accessible from any computer (as long as you have access to the internet). In conclusion, MAC is not worth the hype and is definitely over rated.

I find this article to be very simple and informative that any layman can read and apply these key principles on how to protect their computer.I find this article very useful because I depend on others who are technological savvy to help me, when I encounter any difficulties with my computer. With this useful information, I will be able to perform simple task such as cleaning the computer to keep it healthy.
I definitely support your Idea that MACs are better in the long run than Windows PCs, but there is a third alternative that I think is worth considering, particularly if you want to keep your aging hardware alive, and that is Linux. Linux is much more secure than Windows and much less costly than either Windows or MAC OS. In fact it is free! One disadvantage of Linux in the early days was that you had to be a geek in order to set up your hardware, but the more recent versions are quite intuitive plus its support for older hardware is outstanding.

I found this to be very helpful. Many of the "do not" things to do are exactly what I do so I'm happy to now know better.
After carefully reading this article, I can easily agree with most of the suggestions. To start off, I bought a Mac computer back in 2012 and have used it religiously in college. Luckily, years later and that computer is in tip-top shape. In addition, my PC work computer is just horrible. Files consistently crash and shut down on me when I am working on it. It just seems that it is not up to date with the latest softwares that are out there. henceforth, I easily get angry, restart the computer and now notice that it is just significantly getting worse. This leaves me with one lasting question: Are we going to ever become a Mac world permanently?
As a fan of Macs over PCs I agree with some of the early points you made. A Mac may be more expensive to purchase but its value will be better in the future. I was also surprised to learn that some of the things I do when my computer is having trouble can actually be harmful to the computer. I have often had my computer freeze and my first thought is to just hold down the power button, this is something I will no longer do.

I thought this article provided a lot of useful information. I will definitely use some of the tips. I am not a computer guy and i am learning as i am going.I would have to agree with buying a mac. Before i purchased a Mac, I had about four laptops. I remember years ago spending over $2,500 on a laptop that weighed ten pounds. Needless to say, the laptop crashed several times a year and it only lasted for appropriately three years. Some of the tips provided i am aware of. I have a Mac air for about a year now and it runs smoothly!
I found this article to be a good guide for people who want to keep their computer running properly and for a long time. While this was written in 2011 and the personal computer, cellphone, and tablet market has changed, some of these point although less problematic than before, are still applicable to maintaining even today's computers.

This article was very useful to read and finally I have found someone that agrees on the MAC. I realize many schools you regular PC's and their has always been an issue with systems continually crashing, viruses, questionable pop-ups. I feel PC's one has more ease and freedom when using the controls, and the MAC at sometimes may be annoying with its commands. But when it comes down to a reliable computer, the MAC wins. Yes, they are very costly but they will be worth the money in the end with the life span they have. A MAC I feel can be more well monitored then a PC and have a better chance when retrieving lost data. I bought a Macbook Pro in 2010, and till this date in 2018 the laptop runs better then a majority of regular PC's. Haven't had an issue with it yet, sometimes spending the extra pays off in the end.
I definitely learned a few new things about computers from this article. I practice some of this ideas but not all of them, and I already know what else I will be trying on from now on. I was never a fan of Apple but since I had to change 3 laptops in a past 5 years I'm considering to purchase Mac in future.
With the plethora of technology available to us and the innovations made in the computer and laptop industry, i believe that with the beneficial comes the negative implications. Since the dawn of computers, there have been viruses, Trojans, and etc. As tech companies grow and try to beat these digital threats they will always be ever growing. In addition to these external attacks, we ourselves also add to the problem. I think we take for granted technology for a lack of a better understanding of the mechanics and components in these machines. Following these tips and tricks will definitely help us to limit the problems we face, but also the problems we create.
It came as a surprise to me that you need to limit your upgrades. No more that 2 major upgrades. I used to upgrade every app as soon as its available thinking that it is better for the computer ..turns out it's not

Macs are good but I believe HP's are better. Mac's last about five years until they are so slow to the point where they have to be replaced. Apple has also admitted to slowing down their old computers with new updates in order to get people to buy new ones. If there is something wrong with your HP, it is easier and cheaper to replace the parts.
Maintaining a computer involves a lot of things like keeping it physically clean too. Thanks so much for all the information I just learned from your article. People are not aware all the mechanisms are working beyond the computer. I found this article to be very helpful.
Programs run differently between a PC and a MAC. Interestingly, PC's are stated better for the business world compared to publishing and illustrations. This may be true, but I have been a MAC user for at least 5 plus years. I currently work for H&R Block, and have to deal with Quickbooks and other financial programs that are commonly reffered to using a PC. Personally, this is false. I have never had a problem reading and using any of the software on my Mac. I feel it's a myth, an advertising pitch. I understand DOE programs may run better on a PC, but I know of various schools that have given their teachers the Mac Book air and iPads that connect to their communication and smart boards. Personally, if the software is treated correctly and maintained properly without breaches to the software, I don't think there is any problem.
I find this article very informative and helpful. I do follow some of the procedures mentioned in the article such as; restarting the computer at least once a week, whipping the mouse and the keyboard so dust doesn't pile up. I've used a windows computer for many years. Last year I bought a Mac book Air, and I love it. It definitely works better than a windows computer

This article contained very useful information. Most of the stuff it says not to do is what I do. I have been meaning to buy a Mac but going to wait until my computer cant take anymore hits :)
I couldn't help but laugh while reading this article, because when I was younger, all the "don't" things to do with your computer, I was guilty of doing. As an impatient teen, and even as undergrad I would get so frustrated with my computer that I would constantly restart or reboot it. Then I finally purchased a Mac and my life has changed. It was so much easier to navigate and figure out the problems. Even the applications and software are easier to navigate and have more options to help you out with. But i am guilty of not shutting off my computer enough, so i think i will start doing that more often now.
I personally feel that each of the tips given in the article I have heard before time and time again. When I was younger and we began receiving computer classes, each tip was repeated by the instructor. Learning correct ways to turn off a computer, making sure we didn't open strange files that will harm the computer and much more. However, regardless of how many times we were told the right things to do when it came to technology, there was always that one student who would just completely forget or not care about what was said and do whatever they felt like doing. Therefore, I feel that it is important to know all of these ways to keep your computer healthy, however, we must be mindful of why we must keep our computers healthy. Someone who unplugs a computer and shuts it down without being considerate that it may harm the computer is really not taking care of it. A lot of times this was done with school computers and not a personal computer. In addition, sometimes people feel that it takes longer to properly do something. Therefore, it really depends on the person and how much time and cares they are putting into that computer at that moment.

Hi there friends, its great paragraph on the topic of cultureand entirely

Hi there to every body, it's my first visit of this blog; this website consists of awesome and actually excellent
stuff designed for visitors.
I found this article to be very useful. I have had my Mac computer since 2011 and it's become very slow, but it's still holding on! Consistently deleting old files and staying patient with it when it freezes are some of the habits I have grown into which I think are really healthy for my computer. I also have my DOE work computer which isn't as slow but which turns off unexpectedly more frequently...I've started to become more concerned about this but I think shutting down my computer at least once a week will really help.
This is a very useful and informative article on how to get the most "mileage" out of your computer. The suggestions and advice create a happy, healthy and long lasting relationship with your computer. I appreciated the key advice on which computer brand to purchase and how to maintain it properly. I was surprised that I was not aware of most of these suggestions. Thank you! P.Brodersen (650)
i found this article quite useful. i am not that computer savvy,i can do the basic. One thing i'm guilty of is the updating newer versions of programs and then end up regretting it as i find the older version more useful. I have also been known to "pull the plug" on a occasion, not realizing the consequences of such act. In this day and age social media causes you to recieve many unwanted emails that contain viruses and malware, thankfully I am aware of this and just delete them. I will certainly take your suggestions into consideration. EDSN-650 L.Rivera
This article was very informative and actually provided very detailed information on what to do in case of computer problems. I thought that the information pertaining to computer longevity was very helpful. I have gone through 3 laptops in the course of 5 years. Two were still under warranty and I was provided with a replacement, but I guess you are right, you get what you pay for. In the future I plan on making the investment and getting a MAC which over the long haul will be a better investment. I also found the information useful on the size of memory. I knew that it was important to have adequate memory but I didn't realize that for optimal performance the correct amount is 4 times what the standard unit is. Additionally, at our home we never seem to turn the computer off it is always on standby. I will make it a point to turn off the computer every Friday night as a standard rule so that it too may have a chance to rest. I also have come to realize the importance of allowing updates to occur, in the past I usually dismiss them or prolong them for as long as possible but now I realize how important it is because many of the updates are vital to the computer regulating itself and its programs and working out any problems with newer and more improved versions.
