Are IWBs Past Their Prime?

In recent months (perhaps years) many have questioned the cost effectiveness of the IWB and its siblings. More specifically, educators have voiced concerns that the IWBs are redundant as its interactive features mimic the tablet, which can be purchased for far less money. Additionally, numerous critics have lamented that the professional development services offered by IWBs are all too often substandard. In fact, a perusal of recent articles would suggest that school administrators should trash the IWBs and replace it with either tablets or Smart Phones.
Sounds crazy??? Think again. About 10 years ago, laptops became king. As such, many administrators threw out desktop computers that were still in their prime years. About 20 years ago incoming administrators broke apart computer labs, as the computing trend was to push the computers out of the lab and into the classroom. In recent years, schools have also been ditching old equipment believing that only the latest computer hardware should be used with students. This often happens, as it is convenient to purchase new equipment and follow the adage out with the old, in with the new. However, these same schools then wonder why their network-based programs no longer work or in some cases wish to reassemble the lab when computer labs are in style again. They also cry poverty claiming that their computer to student ratio is atrocious.
At the same time, there are many schools that believe that the IWB can do no wrong. In fact, they are aggressively working to outfit each room with an IWB. I have also noticed that IWB training seminars are always well attended.
So… who is right? After all, in this economy we should not spend our limited funds in a callous manner. In truth, this is not an easy question to answer. Many schools purchase IWBs because it is a brand name they are familiar with and believe it will be easier to get “buy in” from their teachers. Additionally, schools are reluctant to use cheaper alternatives, as they believe it will not be compatible with the software they are using. On the other hand, IWB critics believe this technology is prohibitively expensive and is quickly becoming obsolete. IWB critics also assert that tablets and Smart Phone technology is not only cheaper; it also includes far more interactive features thereby putting the IWB to shame.
In the end, schools have to weigh the facts carefully and decide how to best use technology to best serve the needs of their children. This includes examining the school culture, features of competing technologies, physical space available in the school, the school’s comfort level with varying technology models, and the total cost of ownership.
That being said, we must also be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. While its important to analyze differing technologies and purchase wisely, it is also essential that we carefully analyze how we are going to use our existing technology and re-purpose it when applicable. Additionally, administrators should inventory their existing hardware, assign all functioning hardware a purpose, and pursue a quality training program that helps build instructional capacity as needed and maximizes how legacy and current technology is used.

I do not really know so much about IWBs, because in the country where I came from IWBs wasn’t really used in educational process , but I heard from the people who works with IWBs, that they’re not really interactive. Some people say that this is good idea to make a working station lessons where students would move through different activities in different parts of the class, and one of these activities would be at the IWB . But the people who really try this in the everyday life, did not really like it. So, this is a really open question: Are IWBs Past Their Prime?
If not, how it could be effectively used in everyday educational process?

IWB have been used in many school without any problems. It is an old trend, therefore there is always new models we can replace them with. However, why change something that is not broken. IWB are used for teachers to demonstrate the work to the whole class. The IWB does not allow students to interact with it. This is a flaw many people say, although the IWB was created to help the teacher present the lesson. Instead of spending money on new product just to update the classroom, we should spend money on what the classroom does not have. An alternative is having a few laptops or iPads in the class to help struggling students. Laptops and iPads could be used in a very educational way.

Technology is forever growing and will continue to develop throughout the ages. I am a firm believer in keeping up with technology. I believe that this article sums it up best when it stated that it is up to each individual school to choose which kind of technolofy suits them best. This may depend on several different things such as the cost of the tachnology, the space available in school and the overall demographic.

Interactive White Boards are used in many schools and, in my opinion, are a great way to portray a lesson. IWBs such as the SMARTboard do, in fact, give students the chance to interact with it. In my personal experiences, I have seen teachers use IWB during circle time to teach weather, attendance, etc. One preschool teacher utilized it by allowing students to move there name over to the "in school" column when they came in to class. For this reason, they should be left I the classroom. Why fix something that isn't broken? I understand that we should keep students up-to-date with the new technology but with they way technology is changing, it will cost way too much money to keep updating the technology in every school. I do agree that it is a good idea to incorporate technology such as Ipads, tablets and smart phones for the purpose of getting students familiar with the new technology. Also, using this new technology can be beneficial for some students, especially those who require assistive technology. The truth is, schools are wasting money by throwing away perfectly good technology rather then finding a different use for it.

Back in 1996, My 5th grade Math class received an IWB. Our teacher was so excited with this new technology and I remember him talking about how it will improve our classroom lessons. Next year the IWB were gone because the classroom received brand new Apple computers. Technology is constantly changing and I feel IWB are a waste of school funds.

I have mixed feelings about IWB being replaced with ipads or tablets. Although it is great that each student has their own device to follow along, I feel for control over the classroom teachers should be able to have the option of writing on the board considering the " chalk board" was already taken away. However I feel with individual devices students with vision issues will be able to follow along nicely and not have to worry about not being able to see.

Most schools use technology, I am big fan of using technology in classrooms because everyday technology is changing I feel that students should be exposed to technology in their classroom. Since technology is always changing and improving that schools should try to keep up with the new technology. I have seen many classrooms with IWB and teachers have put great use to it. Students are interactive as well during the lesson.

While IWBs were crucial tools I do believe that the times are changing. Schools should take advantage of a students cell phone, tablet or other new technologies. This will help them to save money because the majority of students now carry these new technologies with them. A student would be more excited to answer a question or participate through a text message from their phone. It helps to keep the child engaged while also keeping the technology cost for the school down.

Although, I think it is important for teachers to use new advances in technology to help teach their students, I think that it is essential that they are trained to work the new technology. On the rare occasions that my teachers actually used a smart board, they had difficulties getting it to work and wasted a lot of time that they could have been teaching.

The interactive whiteboard can serve many different purposes within the classroom. It is both engaging and both rewarding. IWB increases student learning and acquisition - it is also a motivating tool in which an abundance of students like to actively participate in the lesson. I support the IWB in the classroom and am a active user. My students are intrigued throughout the day when the IWB is used - however I believe many teachers have become dependent on the technology and forget how to teach without it - so what if it break?

Being that technology is something that it growing more and more, I definitely feel that IWBs in the classrooms are extremely useful. Of course there are people that may disagree but usually these are the teachers that have been teaching for many years. I feel IWBs are very useful in the classrooms because students are able to interact with it and the IWBs allows teachers to use different colors and pictures which makes it fun for students. We must take into consideration though, that some schools may not be able to afford this type of technology so it may not work for all schools.

Many people have different opinions on IWB's in classrooms. I personally have a SmartBoard in my classroom and find it to be an excellent addition. I use it for whole group activity, introductions to my lessons, interactive activities, and many other things. I would not replace my IWB with laptops or tablets because I what I like most about it is that its big enough for the group to use together. Whereas a tablet or laptop is for more personal use.

I like the use of IWBs. Early in this post it states that some think they should "trash" IWBs and use either tablets or smart phones. I don't think that tablets or smart phones would be as effective. They wouldn't allow for large group use and would divide the teacher as well as the class. I don't think money should be the issue. If the money spent is helping the education field be successful I think this should even be discussed. Technology is always evolving and I think we should keep up with the tools avalible to us.

I think IWB are very effective in the classrooms, this is because there are so many features and options for teachers to teach children in the classroom. I have had many encounters with IWDs and I like they are way more interesting than a regular old black board it keeps students attention when the teacher is able to show them live lesson. So I think IWBs are here to stay..

I think that IWBs are a great way for students to interact with technology and learn in a productive interactive and instantly gratifying manner.

Students often enjoy and respond well to immediate feedback, having a smart board allows them to do so. But technology is always evolving and developing... and I believe that the best way to keep the students up to date is to keep them up with technology, on that note I think that classrooms should service the students in it and if there was a students that would better learn from another means of technology that student should be allowed to use that method. After all, the students are in our class to maximize their potential and by the teacher allowing to use their means of technology we are maximizing their time in the class.

The implementation of IWB's in classrooms have been beneficial for teaching students for many years. IWB allow teachers to demonstrate their lessons and work in a more interactive and efficient way. Opposed to tablets and iPads, it allows the class to interact as a group rather than individually. I believe the IWB creates a natural classroom setting when compared to tablets and iPads. Although individual devices may be more cost efficient, IWB are beneficial in terms of engaging the class as a whole.

I don't see why smartboards and other IWB's are being shoved down the throats of teachers. Can it aid a teacher in teaching? Of course, but I don't see it as a necessity. There's nothing wrong with good old fashion chalk and blackboard. And now that all this technology is being forced on all teachers; teachers have to LEARN how to use it, as well as how to teach their students how to use it. Not ever teacher has the same method of teaching. If a teacher wants a smartboard or other IWB or technology(such as an ipad) that should be their choice.

I also don't see how a smartboard allows for students to hands-on learn how to use a computer. When I was in 4-5th grade we would have computer class(in a computer lab with a teacher who knew how to teach us how to use technology), where we could use the programs and the internet (with child lock safety settings of course) where we could learn what we were interested in. If we really want children to know how to use technology it should be the job of a teacher who specializes in technology and computers.

hi my name is Rochelle Benfield, and my comment on IWB's has set to be non-existent because its old and today we try to account for what's new in technology. In the classroom that I worked, they got rid of the HP computers for Mac computers. there are no more desk tops. as to this article I can relate. with advance technology they believe their going to profit because its expensive. With that said, I believe they should recycle all unwanted computers for future use.

Miranda from EDES class. I would like to add my comment about the importance of IWB in our schools as helpful tools for teachers and attractive for the students. Being part of this technology we need to use this in it main purpose to serve the needs of the children during the learning process. Also I think that IWB is a great combination between business, technology and adaptation with school expectation expectation .Thus I like the idea of using the IWB in the classroom because shows all my work as a teacher and catch up the student attention.

IWBs are used in many classrooms today very successfully. They are very helpful for teachers and for students as well. Using iwbs makes learning process very interactive, students can come up to the board draw, wright on it, have fun while they are learning. IWbs make learning more visible, it has a great impact on the learning process, and promotes better understanding. Using IWBs affect learning process and has a positive influence on better learning outcomes.

Today classrooms are full of students with a range of learning abilities and teachers have a very stressful job. As an educator, I believe that the best way to control a class is to keep them engaged; something that a chalk board fails to do. One of the best ways to keep children engaged is to have a smartboard in the classroom. Every teacher who has one will tell you that they love them because they are highly interactive. It is designed to encourage teachers and students to stand up at the board and either write, draw, or move text around, to play with images and interact with games and learning tools for all subjects. In the past, school text books have limited the way teachers could approach any subject. Now smartboard technology allows teachers to make a lesson plan, upload it to the internet and make it available for any teacher to download. to their smartboard. Then the lesson is ready to go! I believe that smartboards are a step forward for teaching and will hopefully be the norm for every classroom.

This is an interesting article, that makes comparisons between different features that can be used in educational technology.
In an ever changing society technology is used to enhance learning. However, the emphasis should be placed on how to effectively help schools to use the best possible feature or technology that helps students to learn using interactive ways. The classroom should be engaging. Students are able to use I-pads, or laptops easily to find information better because they are familiar with them. Hence, the environment and culture of the school should be carefully considered when choosing these different modes of technology.

Technology is a tremendous part of our future, therefore we have to be open minded when new ideas are presented. I agree with this article when it stated that the choice of technology should be left up to the individual school. What I believe to be important is that their are a variety of tools to teach from and advance the methods of education.

IWB's could be a very useful tool if it is being used correctly. Unfortunately, many classrooms do have a IWB installed, but they are not being used to their full capacity. I've seen some videos that show all of the different pieces of hardware that can be used in conjunction with the IWB's. Some of these things are only catered towards students with high needs, however. I think that they are great because they do get the students involved and excited about learning. My students all raise their hand and are excited to get involved with the lesson. On the other hand, I can't tell you how many times something went wrong with the IWB causing the class to erupt into hysteria. Once all of the kinks are worked out, I think that the IWB would be a necessity in every classroom.

Unknown said...

I believe IWB's are still in their prime. I feel this way because they are still engaging to children in the classroom. In my classroom, it is still considered a novelty. The children still anxiously await their turn to come up to the IWB. If tablets were installed, I believe the students would quickly get bored with it. It would even provide the teachers with fear that students are exploring areas unassigned. For now, I believe the IWB is just fine!

Jenna Politano said...

In my opinion, interactive white boards are a great addition to any classroom. They allow teachers to show videos, PowerPoint presentations, and access the internet quickly for all the students to see. Students are able to come to the board to use it and many children, especially in the younger grades find it to be extremely fun and rewarding to be called on to use the board. Tablets are good tools for helping students in their education, however, I do not believe that tablets should replace interactive white boards. Tablets keep students focused on the tablet in front of them rather than paying attention to the front of the classroom. Tablets are a good addition for the classroom, however, interactive white boards can help the class come together. When a student goes to the board to answer a question, the other students can see their thinking process and exactly how they got to the answer, similar to a regular blackboard. However, it can also be used as a projector, television, etc. So because of this, I do not believe interactive white boards should be replaced by iPads.

Of course, IWBs are revolutionizing the way teachers are able to present information to their students. Many teachers may reason that getting an IWB is better than nothing. I used to teach at the university in my country and there was required to use IWB in the couple of classrooms. However, as a teacher, I had no idea how to use this equipment, especially without access to Internet It’s funny, that, I realized only now, that using interactive whiteboards, teachers can create lessons that incorporate video, moving diagrams, and online content to help explain difficult material and to keep students engaged.

Jeff Wilbur said...

In my opinion, IWB's are still perfectly fine in today's day and age and are not past their prime. Students enjoy the interactive component of technology in the classroom. The fact that we as teachers have the opportunity to keep children engaged by allowing them to use IWB's is extremely important. Children learn in various styles so it is crucial that we as educators give them every opportunity to learn as they need. Visual learners may sometimes need to see videos in order to help them gain knowledge of a specific topic. As long as software continues to be compatible with new technology, I believe IWB's are here to stay. Teachers also need to continue attending Professional Development seminars on new technology in order to keep up with the new changes that are made.

From my personal experience, smartboards are a big hit in the classroom. A smartboard is useful for a teacher to demonstrate his/her lesson to the students. I've found students to be more engaged in a lesson when a smartboard is being used. Using a smartboard reaches many different learning styles at the same time. However, the down side to having a smartboard and relying on technology is that there is always that chance of a malfunction. At times, a teacher has their lesson all planned out however, if the smartboard decided not to turn on, well then the teacher has to always have a back-up plan. Tablets on the other hand I think are also great to use in the classroom. The one main issue with the tablet is that I don’t think teachers really have knowledge about how much can be done with a tablet. I like the tablet for the fact that the teacher is not glued to the front of the class like he/she is when using a smartboard. The teacher now has the freedom to walk around their classroom while continuing to keep the digital lesson moving.

A visual picture will always be an aide to learning. Even though IWBs or Smart boards may have competition with a computer on every desk for students, IWBs are still a tremendous asset in the classroom. Even in a graduate classroom where most of the information that is used on a smart board is in text form, it helps to focus the mind because you are listening and reading at the same time. It is an additional sense that you are using.
A teacher can also tell if the students in the classroom are looking in her direction during a lesson when using a IWB. Are the students engaged in the topic? Interesting graphics can lead to some interesting class discussions. I think, as noted in the above blog, that large attendance at training sessions shows that educators are voting with their feet and they are still interested in using the boards. That interest can also filter down to their students.
When the top of a computer or tablet is up, a student could be looking at anything or at nothing at all. They could be looking at anything while the teacher is elsewhere in the class. Finally, it would be a shame to have so much expensive equipment just set aside. Surely, such great technology could be retooled to be useful in the classroom.

Parents should be aware of the internet risks that their children are in danger of encountering. They should guide them and teach them how to use the internet efficiently and they should also set a good example for their children and be their role models. In addition, they can put only one computer in the household for children’s access not located in their private rooms and keep an eye on their children’s work, actions, as well as choices while using the internet.

Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) have held a prominent place in conversations about technology integration in the classroom for nearly a decade. Teachers see IWBs as motivating gadgets that can capture the attention of students. The interactive electronic whiteboard is great for demonstrations. The board can accommodate different learning styles. Tactile learners can benefit from touching and marking at the board, audio learners can have the class discussion; visual learners can see what is taking place as it develops at the board. Today’s teacher must learn to include a more interactive style of teaching that the technologically savvy student is wired to understand and enjoy. Interactive based learning engages student’s interests, improves student comprehension, and increases student achievement. Using the range of techniques offered by interactive based learning, it will drastically change the overall student performance.
Active involvement in class discussions and incorporating technology are techniques that could be used when trying to engage student’s interests.

Well, prior to reading this blog I did not know about IBWs. After a bit of research I understand more about it. In my opinion, It is a great interactive tool to any classroom. It can be compared to a chalkboard, something that our students are accustomed to, but it has far more useful features. IBWs fosters whole class discussions and activities, it offers instant access to the internet for further research or queries, it also helps the teachers in a useful way to pre-plan activities and select relevant activities to enhance student learning. On the other hand, the tablet offers a personal use. For my observation, some children sneak around and log unto other sites unknown to the teacher.
Those in authority should wisely select the appropriate technology that best serves the needs of their students.

I couldnt agree more, technology plays a vital role in our current educational system. However i do feel that becoming too reliant on it can be dangerous for our students, For example, issues with grammar. I love spell check and use it daily, but there was a time when I had to open a dictionary as a young students and actually show some initiative to figure things out. Now one of the biggest byproducts of increased technology in education is laziness and incompetence. On the other hand, I use a laptop, tablet, mac desktop, cell phone, smartboard, projector and inter active maps to teach my history class. I guess what I am trying to say that staying current with technology is a great thing but we must stay cautious to ensure that it does not become too much of a crutch for our students.

IWB have been used many years ago when I was a student in my country. Later I used it at my lessons to present the material. It is really an old kind of device. And I agree it cannot be interactive, such as it doesn't allow to interact with it.However it can help teachers to portray a lesson. But technology constantly changing. Many new devices appeared. And I know that modern student would be more excited to use new devices than old ones.So it depends only on school and teachers if to leave IWB or just throw it as a trash and change them for more modern devices.

Unknown said...

Personally, I think IWBs are a great tool in the classroom. Kids love technology. It can be the highlight of their school day! I think they are better than Ipads and laptops in the classroom just because it may waste class time getting all the students to keep up with their individual multimedia usage. If one student's laptop malfunctions or they cannot figure out how to use a certain program it will hold up the whole class. If it were a computer or technology class, then part of the learning experience would be the actual use of technology and individual devices would be more necessary.

Jewelz said...

I think the IWB are essential in the classroom, though they might be expensive or not all teachers know how to use them doesn't mean we should cut short the classroom. The teacher might change positions and the next teacher that takes that room might have the capabilities to use the IWB. There are different lessons and the world is adapting to different times and so should a classroom. There is never a good reason to limit a classroom only to enhance it with all possibilities.

Unknown said...

I’m not much familiar with IWB, because in my native country during my childhood there was very limited usage of technology while educating. I think in general visual image was always good aid for leaning. But I also can agree with you that they don't allow for a student focused learning environment. However I also think that usage of computer technology in the classroom gives more opportunities for learning of kids with disabilities as well as it benefits those children that do not have disabilities.

I found this article interesting and up-to-date.There are some pros. and vs. about using IWB in classroom.
As for me I think that there is no need of or being replaced with iPad or tablets. It is useful to use both. I strongly agree that it is very important for teachers to use new advances in technology to help to teach their students. It will help to train students to use new technology to be well prepared for their future life and future career.

I agree with Briana S. on having mixed feelings about IWB being replaced with iPads or tablets. Though I do realize that it is advantageous for each student to have their own device to follow along especially for those students with visual impairments, I still believe for the overall benefit of the class and to keep everyone on track doing it on the smart board (since the chalk board is now rare) is more beneficial to the class as a whole.

IWB is one of the forms of technology which promote the students and teachers engagement. Students are focusing on what the teacher is writing on the IWB as for iPads they are also a great form of new technology which is what most students have and use at home but if can be a distraction at school. If the iPads are contacted to the smart boards and it will be a best way teachers can monitor what their students are doing.

I have had many teachers use IWB's in their classrooms and I see the great benefits that come from using that technology. While IWB's can be expensive, I believe that most students would greatly benefit from the different activities that can be accomplished using them.

IWB are not that important in a classroom. Growing up, I do not having an IWB in the classroom. Sure they can be helpful to the teacher by providing visual prompts to the class, however hands on approach is better. Technology is a big part of our everyday lives, it does not have to be a big part of our education. IWB are not necessary in the classroom, there are other ways to introduce a lesson.

To be completely honest I had to look up white an IWB was. IWB's have surely been replaced by Smartboards and longer are used in the public school. Even thinking back to my High school experience in the early 2000's I never experienced and IWB, let alone a Smartboard. In my own professional experience Smartboards and similar technology provides a unique tool for educators to keep students engaged, excited and interested when used correctly. I agree that IWB's should be re-purposed and used as long as they work.

Unknown said...

So, I'm under the impression that IWB's are "smartboards". These have been present in almost every classroom I've taught in and can't really judge if there is an advantage of using a smart board over a whiteboard. But my gut says that because of the ever expanding technological advances and the speed of them, it seems that children are merely used to using electronics in everything they do. So perhaps this tool will help grasp their ever fleeting attention span.

Personally, I am not familiar with IWBs but I have seen them at my children's school. I believe that they are a great way to capture a big audience. Teachers can benefit from it when teaching a lesson or introducing a new topic. Besides, some children work well in big groups (IWBS), others work better in small groups and then, we have some that love to work individually (Ipads).

For games, reading, and corresponding materials to the board, it serves its purpose. however, if most of the lessons and curriculum are based on the books, and core then it's excellent. However, if the school branches out and is very outside the box, creative thinking, then the smartphones and tablets can be very resourceful. they can use apps and websites and programs galore. it can broaden lots of subjects. it depends on how much a school wants to advance their technology.

IWB are not necessary in the classroom. Growing up, I do not remember having an IWB. Technology is a part of our everyday lives, the less we use technology in the classroom, the better. However, since technology is a huge part of our lives, it is important to incorporate technology in the curriculum. Laptops are a great way explore technology in the classroom. This can help students get comfortable the technology if they are not. Teachers do not need IWB to introduce their lessons. They can use other prompts such as books and manipulatives.

I think IWB help out teachers as a resource, helps teachers to teach in an easier way. It also is very interactive and gets children be more interested. It can help with finding certain videos and websites right away as you teach. You can put on educational videos for the children to watch and it can help them learner better and understand what they are being taught. I think it more efficient than tablets and other technology for classrooms, because it is big and visible to everyone. All of the children can see it and it stimulates them as well.

I personally am in two minds about IBW's. I grew up on blackboards and think they worked just fine. Because we got to copy notes it worked on our penmanship and helped us retain information by writing it down. On the other hand I believe that technology in the classrooms is a positive thing. it has the ability to create more time because the information is already there and doesn't need to be copied over into their notebooks. My main concern is that EVERYTHING is computerized. God forbid we have another blackout, what would we do? we're teaching children to become extremely dependent on technology. I believe a balance is necessary. Too much of anything is never a good thing.

Nowadays many educators are using IWBs very successfully. They are very useful for teachers and students, while teachers can have interactive lessons and students can have fun and enjoy a lesson at the same time. I think it is a great tool for the students to keep them engage and to work as a group. I think that any kind of visual help is a great way for teaching a lesson, because teachers can have access to the internet and different websites with fun activities.

I have fixed feelings about IWB's mainly because I have yet to find one that works the way it should which is so frustrating. My students get distracted very easily because they are very low-functioning and the 5 or so minutes that it takes for me to get in working correctly or working at all is enough time for them to lose their interest in whatever it is we are learning about. The concept of them is great because they are interactive and do add greatly to a lesson. So get them working correctly and its a win win for students and teachers.

I agree with any and all technology in the classrooms because I feel that advancements in our day in education have come and will continue to come from new technologies. If we hold ourselves back from changes in the classroom we will not be able to advance at all whether it be with technology or other useful tools for education. Just as the encyclopedia was replaced with the internet which has brought us great advancements, I believe new technology will always be an advantage.

I think that IWB use in schools should be flexible.Every school should consider their economical situation and teaching philosophy. I am sure that many teachers can be effective with some other tools. And if there is a shortage of funds , the IWB should not be purchased at any cost. Of course, the use of IWB can make the teacher's work easier, but thinking creatively, we can find a solution with some cheaper technology like iPads or iPhones.

I agree that most and foremost today we have to keep up with technology in our classroom. White boards can help support many of our lesson's, tops, studies and come as an advantage when used properly. I also believe, that in some sense we can keep some of the older tradition alive in the classroom and show how they can work hand in hand, that is best!

The article poses an interesting question regarding the use of IWB's, I personally believe that interactive white boards are a good tool to use in the classroom and can serve several purposes. Nonetheless, as the article explains tablets may have far more interactive features than an interactive white board not to mention the endless possibilities that can come from differentiating with a tablet. Although this isn't mentioned in the article I believe its very important to consider this, with an interactive white board instruction is a lot more universal as opposed to using a tablet, educators could edit settings, in order to provide students with learning activities that are tailored to their specific needs and abilities. This allows students to be much more engaged and it also allows lessons to be more effective when activities are differentiated which is very possible with tablets. I am also aware that this type of technology could be rather costly so it is important to weight out pros and cons when it comes to making a decision about this.

I do not know much about IWB however, it seems that they are a great way to interact in the classrooms. Students with special needs may respond more favorably using IWB. Growing up, there weren't much technology that were being used to educate students which can be a positive and negative thing. Students shouldn't always depend on technology in their everyday lives. Humans need to use their own brains to solve problems.

I have been in several classrooms with IWBs as well as laptops for the students to use. I think that there is a place for both in the classroom. The IWB is a great addition to any classroom because it allows the teacher to control the technology and use it to address the entire class. This is useful for teaching new concepts or watching a video. Teachers and students are able to physically manipulate information on the board and the rest of the class is able to observe. Laptops are useful in the classroom for reviewing or remedial learning. Not every student is on the same level and having a laptop with interactive remedial lessons or games aimed at each students level is beneficial to both student and teacher. -------------Kelly Subjenski EDSN650

I currently work in a high school that has two computer labs with about 25 computers each and every classroom has a minimum of one computer. I feel that computers and the common technology in a school setting is good to have. The students in my classroom are very high functioning, so sometimes the only escape they have is to get to a computer and blow some steam off. In todays day and age, the only thing keeping students engaged is some sort of technology, so that is why I am pro having computers in a classroom. I feel IWBs are very useful in the classrooms because students are able to interact with it and the IWBs allows teachers to use different colors and pictures which makes it fun for students. So why not have something so creative and intelligent in todays classrooms…

Since technology taking over now and for sure much more in the future it is fine to have the IWB to improve technology. By having this advantage of having technology in the classroom being able to teach different lessons different activities to improve the education system. Using IWB can help educators improve and multitask when education different age group. This can improve and help many students that get a better understand in leaning visually.

Personally, I think IWBs are a great tool in the classroom. How else to grasp a child’s attention if not with technology. It is a very common nowadays to use any type of advanced technology especially in the classrooms. I personally am not too familiar with the IWB but I am familiar with the “smart board” so if that’s what it’s in reference too than I’m all for it. They are much better than iPad’s as the screen is much wider and everyone can focus better without squinting their eyes. IWB’s are excellent tools to use in order to keep kid's attention at the lesson.
Technology is always developing and I believe that the best way to keep the students up-to-date is to keep them up with technology.

The beginning of the second to last paragraph nicely sums up the essence of this article. It states, "In the end, schools have to weigh the facts carefully and decide how to best use technology to best serve the needs of their children." This statement implies that there are many factors to be discussed before deciding conclusively that replacing IWB's with Ipads/Smartphones in the classroom is the best option for students. Ipads and Smartphones may surely be the popular trend nowadays. However, it may not be the most suitable option to be used to enhance a child's education. Therefore, before such a decision is made, several factors must be taken into account.

I myself have not used an IWB in my classroom, but I have seen one in action and how children in kindergarten and first grade interact with it. I think exposing the children to an IWB is a positive thing. Although some may argue that IWB's are obsolete, given that children can use their tablets or ipads, in my view they are not the same device, since IWB's are useful in a group discussion setting.

As a classroom teacher who uses an IWB daily, I assert that IWBs are definitely worth the high cost. IWBs are very beneficial for all students and all types of learners. Not only does the board provide constant visual cues and supports, but it also engages students because they are interested in most activities that involve some type of technology. IWBs can incorporate items such as pictures, graphics, sound bites, and videos. This is especially beneficial for visual and auditory learners. IWBs also offer many different strategies to make lessons interactive. This means as an educator that I am more equipped to reach kinesthetic learners. Overall, I think IWBs help all students and all learners and are a worthy addition to any classroom.

IWB in the classroom benefits the teacher and their students. There are times, teacher may not have enough money to create materials, worksheets, tools, and a IWB can demonstrate all these resources to the entire class. It is important also for teachers to be educated about IWB before entering their classroom at the start of the year. When teachers know what their device is, they will better show their students. However, it is important for teachers to not only depend on a IWB and use one to one interaction with students so they know that the teacher is there of them not just a device/IWB.

As someone who has never quite gotten to use a smart board, I have always wanted to learn how. I've never had one in my classroom but I have seen my professors use it along with elementary school teachers using it while I was student teaching. So I guess in my case it is a bit of a novelty. With that being said, I like the idea of the children being able to come up and show the class what they are doing which in my opinion, is where the advantage comes in as compared to a handheld device. I also think it's a great way to expose children to another type of technology which they wouldn't have access to at home, giving them a broader range of technology knowledge.

The interactive whiteboard (IWB) can serve many different purposes within a classroom. It allows students to interact with one another and engage in the lesson. However, in my experience as an educator, I have noticed that many teachers do not have the proper training to operate the newest technology. Although the IWB is a great product to invest in, you need to understand its potential to use it to its greatest ability. Differentiation is essential within a lesson and the IWB allows you to target all learning needs within your classroom.

Although I am not familiar with IWBs, I see no reason in fixing something that isn't broken. If the IWBs already mimic many features that tablets have, there is no rush to purchase every new gadget that comes to play. Interactive White Boards are an effective way to enhance student learning and classroom interaction. It is very important for learners who have different learning styles and should be kept in the classroom.
On the other hand, we have to grow with the changing technological advances of this era and as such must be able to adapt to new products as long as they are targeting the learning needs of our kids.

Technology is a major part of our future and our student's future. I believe this is a very interesting article because it shows great points to both sides of argument. however, most schools in the NYCDOE now have interactive whiteboards. from my experience, i believe they are a great resource for students and teachers. Many students are not comfortable talking in front of a class, however they have no problem solving a problem on a IWB because it entails little to no talking. we the educators must stay current with the evolving times and adapt to all the new technologies available. As long as they are targeting the learning needs and interests of our students there is nothing wrong with jumping on board. These devices help reach more students than the norm and as teachers that is what we look to do on a daily basis.

In my opinion I am on the fence when it comes to technology in the classroom. Overall I believe it is completely contingent upon the students and how they learn best. Having the smart board/desk in the classroom could be extremely beneficial to one student while also quite overwhelming to another. For the students who learn better using technology, smart boards/desks should be incorporated into their unique and custom curriculum. All in all I feel it should be the students' decision whether or not to use them.

I do not see the point in throwing away or replacing any form of technology that is not broken. IBW's are useful in helping teachers use media to help engage students in the classroom. If the IBW's are still able to perform that task at hand and use the compatible software, then I see no reason to get rid of them. I feel that children need to learn the basics from computer labs. They do not need an expensive MAC laptop to teach them how to type or play math games.

I believe that IWD's are a very useful tool for the teacher and is a great benefit for the students. I do not feel that they are past their prime and should continue to replace the white board as the centerpiece of the room. Schools should also utilize newer technology and tablets or IPads as well a students smartphones but I do not believe that they should constantly be updating their equipment because technology is moving at a fast pace and that would be too expensive. Although they should keep on top of any updates of apps and programs which become available for their equipment.

I agree that schools need to be resourceful and find a way to use existing technology and at the same time introduce newer technology to students. Similarly, schools should be using their funds wisely to buy new technology, and be more critical of what kind of tech to buy. Some tech is more useful and will outlast the other options.

I believe that IWB's should be implemented in a classroom, I see no problem with using different companies and actually think, that as more companies will be used it could lead to healthy competition between companies, which could lead to better and cheaper product. Important fact for me, that educational system should invest not only in installation of IWB but also in teachers training programs as often IWB would be installed in a classroom, but would never be used, as teachers do not have a proper training.

The IWB already seems outdated, and schools need to keep up with the currrent trends. I think tablets , and other newer software are easier to use, and kids can relate to them better. The IWB is more for the teacher to use, meanwhile a tablet can be easily used by any child, and does not need training. This reduces time and money, that can be better used for other purposes. In all honesty though, although schools do have a need to keep up with current technology, their main focus should be teaching the kids. I think real teaching can only happen when a teacher connects with their students, and it is becoming increasingly harder to connect with our students when they are so accustomed to using technology , and are having fewer and fewer real life interactions.

I agree with the theory that we need to keep up to date with technology (if that's possible). I am not, by nature, a wasteful person; however, I'm not sure that sticking with the IWB's are the best idea. Perhaps in this way we will make everyone or almost everyone happy.

I do agree that tablets and Iphones are less expensive and have resourceful interactive features, however providing each individual student with such product can lead to trouble. Are these students liable for damage done to these products? Hold do we hold students accountable for loss property? I do believe the classroom should be less teacher centered, and with each student possessing a tablet this would help promote that setting, however I am ambivalent towards the idea of replacing IWB's with tablets.

I see a lot of schools are now just starting to get use to them and see what they are capable of doing. The smart broads capture the children as a whole than an individual child. Which makes the class and teachers be engage as one group.

The debate highlighted in this post (regarding which technologies to implement in the classroom setting, as well as which technologies to utilize school wide) is one that is not easily settled. Like many other educational quandaries, there is no "one size fits all" answer. I believe that each school should base its technological decisions on the unique needs of its students. For example, some schools may find that their students have too much "screen time" on ipads, iphones, tablets, computers, and televisions at home. In this case, an IWB may be an asset to the classroom when needed; a way to incorporate technology without reaching a saturation point. In the opposite example, a school may find that their students are not exposed to technology at all in their homes. In this case, a school may want to incorporate ipads and computer labs to help educate their student body about technology in lieu of an IWB. Schools must also consider the needs of their teachers, insuring that their teachers are adequately trained to use which ever technologies are decided upon.

I don't think IWB's are past their times, and can still reap many benefits withing the classroom, particularly in special education classroom environments. Items such as Smart boards, and the Prometheus can be used to enhance lesson plans and teaching, given that it doesn't overpower the lesson. Teachers can utilize IWBs to gather students' attention in one viewing area, as compared to individual tablets; although both has their benefits. Depending on budget, both IWBs and tablets can serve as useful tools in the classroom.

As both a student and an educator, I find that IBWs can be a useful tool. My program in college was one of the first that allowed students to use IBWs, and my first class as part of the NYC DOE I found IBWs to be very helpful. Seeing both sides of the coin (and also seeing both my students and co-workers picked up IBWs relatively easily) I think there is balance that works in the classroom. They're interactive/student friendly enough to get students attention, as well as simple and useful enough to be an educators' tool. One class I had during the past year was even more receptive to using the white board instead of doing the same assignment using an Ipad. There was just something about the class participating and going in front of the class to use the IBW. Cost wise, I am not sure if the balance is worth it. With Schools needing as much money as possible, is it worth it to use a tablet or other technology? Thats the only question I would have to ask during this process.

Unknown said...

I have a mixed feelings when it comes to IWB's due to the fact that I've seen them in two separate schools, both containing students with Autism and other neurological issues. When I used the IWB with my student's with severe cases of autism, my results were more positive than negative. Because the board is so big and bright, it was an instant "eye catcher," leading to more students being attentive as well as starting the lesson quickly (which is rare and difficult when working with students with special needs). My students were very engaged with the lesson and were able to walk to the board and perform simple (or complex) directions with delight. This was due to the fact that instead of looking at a boring blackboard or worksheet, this lesson allowed them to physically interact with the materials and made it seem much more real from their perspective.

I do think that, in cases for normally developing students, ipads and/or smart phones would be less of a distraction and offer more interactive programs. But, some kids will play with the ipad while lessons are going on, pretending to do their work, but the instructor cannot see because he/she has many other students and cannot see all idpads at one time. This is where a IWB would be more preferred.

If we're going by cost, then why don't we try and have more e-books or copied materials instead of textbooks? Textbooks are exceedingly expensive and usually used for only a couple years then replaced for newer books. Downloading the information to a student's ipad or smart phone would save the school system's thousands of dollars and could be used for more interactive tools for the future generations.

As a student, I've never used a IWB. Going by the opinions and actions of my students, I feel that IWBa are better for a group of low functioning students with special needs, but for typical students, ipads or smart phones are better for overall coast, information storage (can take work ho,e, IWB stays in classroom), and more available programs for education advancement.

Interactive whiteboards can be a controversial issue when it comes to discussing the cost effectiveness and whether or not these tools are outdated. I taught for 2 years in a room without an IWB, and obviously you get by and you find ways to engage students. I am now teaching in a building where there are IWB's in each classroom. I have found that these are great ways to engage the students and capture their interest. I can quickly hook up my laptop for a smart board lesson where students can become a part of the lesson. For example, I taught I lesson today on shapes and the students were able to come drag the shapes into the correct categories. I've also used the IWB to display class incentives such as Class Dojo which is linked directly to the parents cell phone. These are ways to use the IWB in the classroom and monitor the students learning. I am able to engage the student with technology while also being able to assess their learning in the moment. If I were to use laptops or individual computers in its place, there would be less opportunity for me to check in on students usage as I would then be monitoring 25 computers instead of one. I also like the IWB usage as I can first call on a higher student who will model a second time for the class, before reaching a struggling student. The IWB can be used as a launch into independent computer time as well. It allows the students to see the lesson and material in real time and watch what they will be doing before goin on their own.

I think the use of IWBs is becoming more and more popular in our schools. Students are even able to use these IWBs on their own they know how to connect everything and perform tasks without the teachers help. Schools should not throw out any old equipment without trying to see if it can be used in other areas. We should not be wasting our schools limited funds on these if they are not a necessity, however if there is room in the budget and the administration is willing to get these IWBs I think they are very beneficial.

I see why schools are trying to keep up to date with the latest technology. All schools want to provide their students with the best education possible, and in today's society, that means offering the best and coolest technological tools. The problem is that so much energy and money is wasted trying to keep ahead of the tech race. New stuff comes out every month and unless a school has an unlimited budget, its doomed to failure. My advice would be to supply students with the basics - a computer lab, maybe a tablet or two, but that's it. There are more important aspects to educating children, that are a better use of time, money and energy, than trying to update every year.

Before reading this article I didn't really know much about IWB's but after reading this it has given me a much better understanding of what it is about. The interactive whiteboard could be used for many purposes in a classroom where it is beneficial to all. It is a tool that is motivating to its audience in which several students will actively participate in. This can even allow for students to be engaged and fully feel apart of the lesson as the day goes on.

As an educator I think the IWB brings a lot of positive to the classroom. Its an advanced tool that helps engage the students while being used as the platform theyre learning on. I do think that using tablets in the classroom is a better option than the IWB, but looking beyond that I think students should use their own cellphones in the class as an interactive tool. Currently in the high school I work in students often use their phones in class to participate in an online educational game called "kahoot." This is when I see the students the most engaged and having the most fun.

I understand that one day IWB's will be outdated but for the present IWB's are the best tool available to teachers AND students in the classroom. If what educators truly care about are the students, then we cannot take it away from them until there is a better option.

It is difficult for me to say anything relevant about IBW technology since I have never encountered one during my student or teaching experience. I can, however, without a doubt, admit that in the current economic situation, administrators should spend their budget money wisely. Before purchasing any new technological devices it is important to ask a question what purpose would they serve, what learning goals are we achieving and can we achieve them with the cheaper equipment. Besides technology, kids need well equipped indoor and outdoor gyms, well stocked libraries, and good quality food served in cafeteria. There is not enough money to cover all of the needs, and, in my opinion, not all of it should be spent on new technological equipment.

I feel that a child is more interested in the lesson with IWB based on the feature’s it has like different colors, touchscreen, pulling up videos, etc. In my experience, kids with special needs feel more motivated when using IWB when they come up to use it. They also have math/English games that teachers can pull up to make the lesson more interesting and engage more students in the lesson.

Different classrooms or different students may benefit more and be more productive in their learning, while to others it may just be a distraction that is not enhancing their learning process. From a personal experience I have seen much success in using IBWs with young students especially, and has enhanced their learning experience. If a school has IBWs, I am of the opinion that they should keep it and maintain them to best benefit the students.

technology is always being advanced and teachers and other administrators will always look to get the best for there school. it doesn't matter if one type such as IEBs have been used more frequently. with the advancements in technology now a days it is obvious that the new technologies will be implemented in schools. IWBs are very good for the teacher to show things to the class as a whole and guide them through what they can do.

I believe that an IWB is a great addition to any classroom. Technology is a big hit with children and they seem to be quite attentive while it is in use. Being a multi-functional tool, teachers can prepare their lessons beforehand. A teacher should not just depend on an IWB, they need to remember that they are there to teach as well.

I find it interesting that IWBs can be seen as past their prime. It seems to me as if many teachers are still learning how to use IWBs effectively. I do think that they are great tool to have in the classroom because they can make lesson more interactive and engaging. However, I do understand that they are very expensive and if they are not used appropriately and frequently, they can be a big waste of money. There are other technologies that can be used in a similar way such as iPads and laptops. While, I think that iPads can be very useful because of all of the new and innovate apps and programs that can be used on them. However, I'm not sure if a class set of iPads would be that much more cost effective. Ipads also give more control to the student and less to the teacher. Normally this would be a good thing, but I worry that students may take advantage of a tablet and use it for purposes other than the classwork. Even with a teacher circulating the room, it can be difficult to make sure that all of the students are on the right track.

Working in a special education classroom, I find that the IBWs are a great way to engage students. It is a great tool for teachers and students to work with. Technology is constantly changing, however, there is no need to replace something that is relevant and benefiting the students. Budgeting is a very important factor with schools, but if you are able to access both a tablet and IBW then do so. Some children work better on their own with a tablet, and others may strive in a group setting with IBW. It all depends on the setting/ children/ budget/ and teacher.

While pursuing my undergrad, i was introduced to IWB's. At first i thought they were the dumbest things ever invented, and then I took a course on its use. I noticed that in an early childhood class, IWB are extremely useful. Its a great way for students to learn from one another why utilizing todays technology. All activities are just a click away. It also makes it easier for a teacher when preparing lessons. In this time era, we are all either working from a laptop or smartphone. Uploading a lesson for the entire class to see is "GOLD." However, IWB are not as useful for middle or high school students. Tablets would allow these students to be a little more personal with their work. We encourage students to be independent and at that age they would be knowledgable enough to access assignments and work independently. So, there is a need for both, it just depends on the grade level.

While I can certainly see that IWBs are a useful tool, I do feel as though it really is identical to a tablet. Although schools will not always have the funds to replace their technology. It is a balancing act between giving the best education possible for the children as providing useful and capable tools for teachers to provide the best experience possible.

I believe a balance of both is needed in the classroom. Interactive white boards have their advantages and disadvantages just like tablet do. I believe they each can be effective for certain areas or subjects. Having the children in a classroom all have their eyes on the center of the room interacting is a extremely effective teaching tool and strategy. Giving the children the responsibility of performing the same tasks on a tablet can be tricky. Although it has it's advantages, you might be giving the students to much responsibility.

I have learned about some of the uses of IWBs and see them as an awesome tool to have in a classroom. The IWBs helps to keep students engaged especially those students who would usually be reluctant to participate in an at the board class activity. IWBs allow teachers to create various activities to teach and assess their students with. IWBs, laptops, iPhones and iPads are intriguing tools for children. Children they like technology especially when they seeing the many things they can do with and learn from these tools. Because there are constant advancements being made in technology and schools have budgets, they can't afford to continuously invest in new teaching tool and program every time they come out. I believe that schools should continue to use the IWBs as well as desktops, laptops, and tablets. I also believe that they must really think about whether it is cost effect to stop using or discard IWBs equipment to adopt new equipment to use. I believe that teachers should be able to determine which technology works best in conjunction with their teaching style and the learning style of their students. I think IWBs should continue to be used in the classrooms.

I believe that IWB's are extremely useful in a classroom setting regardless if they are outdated or not. SmartBoards are a great way for teachers to engage their students and have then be interactive. Every technology over time will have flaunts but it doesn't mean that it's worthless.

I am really not technologically advanced that when reading this post, I did not even know what an IWB is. After checking it up, I am guessing that it is similar to a SmartBoard. I believe that IWB's are extremely helpful in a child's education. When I was in school, they helped me a great deal. My teacher prepared interactive games, everything was big, there was no messy handwriting needing to be deciphered; it made learning simple yet fun. While one can argue that they are outdated and useless, I do not agree. As long as they are helping the children enjoy learning, it is worth the keeping. One does not have to have all the latest technology in order to serve their students to their utmost ability. As long as one loves his students and encourages their learning, the children will be in good hands. In my opinion, technology is not the all or nothing- computers from a couple of years ago are just as useful as the latest version.

Alyssa M EDSN 650- Spring 2017 said...

I must admit I had to google what IWB stood for, I had no clue. I have never heard this term I have only heard it referred to as a SMART Board, which I am assuming is the same thing. As a person who is not a fan of technology the SMART Board is something that I have come to love and appreciate. I find them to be extremely useful in a classroom. I have seen them be used as an interactive projector during math lessons and even to play games using vocabulary words. I see the author’s point of view about how certain devices such as tablets can be more effective however, the school I am currently working for would never be able to afford to purchase one for every student. Currently my school still has classrooms without SMART Boards and some classrooms only have one computer. I agree that every school must individually assess themselves to decide which technology devices would best support their student’s needs. I personally wish that my school would provide me more training on the devices we have access to in our classrooms because I have seen the SMART Board be used in such amazing ways and it’s a shame that less than half of the staff knows how to utilize all its assets.

While I was student teaching for my undergraduate, I was placed in a classroom with a IWB. Unfortunately, the teachers did not know how to use it. Therefore, it was just part of the classroom and not part of their everyday activity/lesson. I think that the schools should spend more time training and teaching teachers on strategies on how to incorporate IWB into their lessons. I believe that IWB will help the teachers when teaching if they know how to use it. It will be a waste of government funds to throw away IWB and replace them with new technology. The teachers might not even be able to use the new technologies.

IWB are used mainly to model for students in small groups or for students to work together in a group setting on one particular problem (in a math class for example). More intricate resources, such as iPads are also being used in the classroom but for the most part it comes down to the students still being needed to write out steps to a problem and not just relying on a machine. State tests are still in the written form and for some parts, a calculator is not even permitted. This means students still need to independently solve problems and using IWB are a good way for students to learn from a teacher or from a peer.

IWBs are very convenient for the classroom, as years ago, teachers had to rent the tv/vcr or work with a flimsy projector and slides. IWBs give instant access to everything on the internet for the whole classroom to use and see. The fact that all of the children can use it benefits the environment of the classroom because it encourages interaction within the lesson.
IWBs have also been used to effectively teach students with cognitive disabilities through the use of games and videos.

I believe that IWB's are great in the classroom community. My experience with them, is a very positive one. In the school which I work in, we have IWB's in every classroom. The students love interacting with them, using Power Points on them and coming up the the board to play educational games. It has everything a computer has plus more. The screens are large so every student is able to see, and they can also answer questions on them and come up to the board to write on them as well. It keeps the students active in the classroom, so they do not get bored sitting in their seats for the entire day. I think they are a beneficial idea for all classrooms in schools.

I do believe that IWB is necessary in the classroom. IWB is a great tool for Teachers to model and demonstrate lessons for students. Technology do help and it is truly convenient, however by using technology you rely on internet and wifi. In addition, you need to update your knowledge and information if you rely on technology. Therefore, i believe it is beneficial to keep the IWB in the classroom.

Although the IWB have been used in schools in order to help teachers demonstrate a lesson plan depending on the subject, it does not allow interaction with the students. Laptops and iPads are more beneficial because the lesson plan can be demonstrated and children are able to practice those demonstrations as well. I believe funding should be spent on new improved technology as opposed to updating old software.

Unknown said...

I think everyone should do what works for them. Where is laptop, desktop, smartphone, tablet, or Iphone. As far as schools are concerned, each school should purchase within their budget to make sure the students have access to the technology. I know the schools do what they can to be updated with the state of the art technology, at the same time, purchase the technology they can.

As the professor mentioned, many people do believe that the latest technology and information is always the best; therefore, they disregard all of the former software and programs they had. I agree that this is not always the wisest option. Simply because something is new does not mean it is better. For example, when i phone releases a newer software with more options many people do not like it and try to stall in updating their software or when a newer version of i phone is released some may be the first to purchase the newer model while others will assess the features and options to contemplate whether the "newer i phone" is the "better" choice. Newer isn't always better.
Professor Gutnicki stated, "we must also be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. While its important to analyze differing technologies and purchase wisely, it is also essential that we carefully analyze how we are going to use our existing technology and re-purpose it when applicable". Re purposing technology and making the best use of existing technology is very possible and very economically efficient! Simply because there is a newer smart board model does not mean it is a necessity. Individuals can use computers and other technology and upgrade certain features without disregarding older models and buying new ones. Purchasing new technology right away is not very wise for school budgets. There are many other more productive ways to use allotted money that would benefit and enhance education. As the professor suggested, rather than purchase new equipment altogether, schools should assess the needs of students and assess what features could be supplemented prior to forfeiting large sums of money that can be better suited and equally improve education.

IBW's are a great way to engage students in the classroom and a great way to conduct interactive lessons. In my opinion, I think students work well and are stimulated by visuals. IBW's are also great for daily lessons because it can accommodate the diversity in classrooms (ICT, self-contained, etc.). In addition, considering that technology is always developing, students should be exposed to up-to-date programs and devices. I think that some schools struggle to decide if technology should be an important aspect in the classroom due to issues such as not enough money or not enough space. However, I think that there should be some type of exposure to technology, considering the world we live in today.

I have seen IWDs work really well in the classroom setting. They help with math lessons and interestingly, with religious studies. In both these cases, the students, who were 9 years old at the time, gained a lot from their experience with IWDs. They made lessons more interesting and interactive. Also, they made the students more involved with the content of the lesson. It would be too bad to completely do away with something that is such a positive learning tool. I think that the downside with lap tops and tablets is that though they are cheaper, they do not allow for collective classroom learning. This is positive in order to ensure that the entire class is working together, staying on task, and learning on grade level

I feel that IWBs are very effective in the classroom. They are interactive and engaging. I use an IWB for almost all of my lessons. However, I also feels it is important for students to get used to utilizing the features of a laptop, desktop or tablet . Being computer literate is a very important skill necessary for future success. Additionally, many students in the Title 1 school that I work in do not have access to technology at home. Since many schools have limited funding and cannot purchase both laptops and IWBs for every classroom, it is important for school administrators to be able to balance and maximize funds.

When it comes to education and technology I believe that they go hand in hand. We live in a society that is constantly moving at a rapid pace so we should have the technology to suit. However, that doesn’t always mean out with the old and in with new. IWB’s may be coming replaced with newer age technology for some of us, however there are places where they can be extremely useful. We must examine the demographic and their ability to use technology in the appropriate manner. As a professional working with preschool age children it is extremely important for them to learn the traditional way as well as the modern way. Ipads and tablets are useful, but can be difficult to monitor 12 students at a time. IWB’s however due to its physical size can be useful for larger groups, monitoring content use, as well as encouraging social interaction.

I believe that technology is very effective in the classroom to support students' learning and raise their academic achievement.I have observed teachers who used IBM smart boards as a teaching tool in the classroom were very interactive with their students during classroom discussion, especially when they are using power point to teach a lesson. however, Ipads devices are a powerful interactive tool to use in the classroom, especially with students who are classified with a disability, and needs that support and accommodation to meet their needs. I agree with the writer that "we cannot throw out the baby with the bath tub" because there are times when we need to refer to that bath tub for future references.Technology is improving rapidly, and teachers and students needs to get acquainted with these new features, but we don't need to abandon the technological tools that were in existed before.

Based on the fact that technology changes over time and that new informational research has paved the way for technology which is now more interactive and designed to offer a variety of options to learners would prompt me to agree with "out with the old and in with new." However schools need to be mindful of making quick decisions that tend to be expensive. I would suggest that schools find creative ways of integrating IWB into their modern classrooms regardless of the fact they would prefer newer forms of technology. Gradually phasing in newer technology would allow them time to make a less costly transition to newer versions of technology.

At first I didn't know what IWB was really for or what use people made out of it. IWB is also known to be a smart board. At first, I thought that smart boards took away from the student's learning but I no longer feel the same way about that statement. This technology gives the students a fresh look at the lesson plan and it breaks down the information in a more kid friendly way. IWBS are not past their prime. I actually wish I was able to have this experience in my education growing up.

I'm not very familiar with IWB, but I think that teachers needs new technology implement in their classrooms. This will make a lot more easy not just for teacher but for students as well. It is very important to bring in what is new in order to have students feel more comfortable and secure. Nowadays most of the students know how to use tablets and smartphones, and they want to see what they are learning. for example when you read a story to the classroom and you have access to show them page by page, the teacher will gain more attention from them, rather than just reading aloud.

I think the IWB is not past their prime. It is an effective tool, moreso than the desktop computer because the teacher is able to display their lessons and activities on the screen for all to see. The IWB also allows teachers to write on the board in many colors to help students better understand the lesson through visuals. IWBs can also play videos for the class and a teacher can seamless change screens and integrate all types of media into the lesson. These things could be done on a desktop computer but at a smaller scale and is not large enough for the class to see.

I as well, was a little confused about what an IWB was even after reading the article. But one of my classmates were kind enough to explain it to me. I like Smart Boards in the classroom. i feel it is the present and future in teaching and there are many things you can do with them. they are used for all subjects. I feel because of the direction teaching is going, which is the direction of technology, the smart board gives the students another option in learning.

All schools use technology and I think its a great idea in today's world. IWB is very effective in the classroom because of different options teachers and students can learn and teach their students. Also, when a teacher is dong a lesson for the students with IWB the students can visual the lesson and make it helpful for students. Students can also come up and answer questions and learn hands on.

Tehila Tamaiev said...

I agree that no matter what technologies are introduced to the schooling system, administrators and teachers must think how it can be used to the benefit of the students. In addition, as the article discussed proper training should be given whenever needed. Also old equipment and hardware should not be trashed, but incorporated into the new technology being introduced. IWB's can still be used when and if possible.

Unknown said...

In my experience it is beneficial to classroom to utilize both IWB's as well as other technologies based on the type of lesson you are teaching. Lessons which require the entire class to be focused on a certain piece of material are better suited for the SMART board; mainly because this allows the students to focus their attention on a specific module in the classroom.

Other devices, such as iPads and Smart Phones have their advantages too, namely in group/individual work. These devices allow students to conduct their assignments on their own time.

In terms of cost, this is where things become tricky, especially when working with lower income populations. Personally, I work in a school where not every child has a smart phone and not every classroom is blessed to have laptops or iPads for every student. Thus, many of my students only have access to an IWB in the classroom. While it is easy to say that these devices may be more efficient, they are not always readily available the way a IWB is, even an outdated one.

I firmly believe in spending money where it is necessary. As a result, if the IWBs are still in working condition they should not be destroyed. What I would suggest is to introduce these more recent technology and use them along with the old ones until they go bad. As the old ones go bad they will eventually be fazed out and the new ones will continue to serve its purpose. I just wouldn't destroy something that's good just to get new ones.

Why through out something that is still working. I thing money should be spent where it is most needed. I would suggest that principals replace ones that are not working with the newest technology. In classes where these are still working, introduce the new technology and let the class use both until the older one breaks.

I can argue that the IWB will not be obsolete I hope in the nearest future. I think every electronic device has it's purpose and function. As a teacher I would rather use the white board for the whole class and even groups of students and, and also use it as a presentation tool in my class, because it's clearly visible for all students. If I want to engage students in individual work, e.g. research, essay writing, etc., I would use chrome books, lap tops , ipads.
Thank you.

In my opinion, IWB's are very useful in the classroom. Their functionality allows interaction from the teacher while all students are able to see what's going on. The problem with tablets is that they limit the effectiveness of the classroom environment. Opportunities for working with peers can be limited if the students are each focused on their own tablet instead of an IWB in the middle of the room.

While IWBs may seem outdated to some schools and school districts, an interactive white board is actually deemed useful in my own classroom. To start off, I use my IWB every single day in my classroom. As soon as the students walk in the classroom, they board is on and they are ready to begin the days lesson. In addition, in my classroom, the IWB is used as a guide for my students as well as myself. With each slide or page in PowerPoint or Smart Notebook, I remember where I am and my students know where they should be.

However, while an IWB is deemed useful in my classroom, it is actually true that it can be easily replaced with smartphones or tablets. On a school wide spectrum, students given tablets would need to learn how to properly care for one in order to get them used properly and for the right reasons. In addition, students could have access to all their information on their Ipads and could never use the excuse that they lost their paperwork again.

Having kids use their own IWB could be problematic. In one of the math classes that I para for, student have been assigned individual tablets to work with and most of the time they end up going on websites they should not be going on. I personally feel that it is a distraction.

IWBs in my opinion are great for the classrooms due to the fact they take up less space, and the Screen size is decent for a class to see. But when it comes to pricing, I can understand why many deter from the idea of having them in the class. In my opinion I find having students use a tablet can be more affordable then having one of the machines in the room. Students can be trained to use these portable devices and can be more engaged in the class, rather then all the students looking at one screen.

As part of the technological generation, i grew up with access to the internet and computers whether it was in the classroom or the public library. as time went on technology rapidly evolved and became the integral component of life. Having adapted almost every aspect of my life with technology, i find it tough to believe that existing traditional models such as education can afford to stand by and rely on obsolete technology or practices. However, over the course of my professional career i have had the opportunities to work with blackboards (chalkboards), IWBs, Laptops, and even iPad. Ultimately while it is nice to have access to such an array of technology, each has its benefits and disadvantages. I have noticed with laptops and computers the pedagogy becomes slow and heavy, always having to deal with the technical aspects of network connectivity, student accounts, and simply the bulk of it all. technology like iPad are versatile and immediate, but provide students with too much freedom and access to dissuading content/apps. Ultimately i believe that we should embrace new technology with a touch of caution on the part of teachers and students alike, while not completely trashing the technology we have deemed "obsolete."

Technology is constantly evolving therefore applying the philosophy "in with the old, out with the new" would cause many schools extreme deficits. As the article states, schools should carefully decide how to best use technology to best serve the needs of their children. So long as the basic needs are met, schools should not be trying to keep abreast with the most recent trends.

Comment towards the saying "out with the old, in with the new", Aren't IWB relativity new? are we are already taking them out the classroom. To my knowledge the cheapest IWB in a classroom go for 10k and up. I strongly disagree with this. Schools already have a limited budget and should not be used for laptops for all. Also, it will be difficult for an educator to teach a lesson while and monitor the students. Students can be easily distracted due to this. lets go back to the chalk board.

I do not think that interactive smart boards should be replaced with other technology especially in the younger grades. I teach kindergarten and I cant imagine not having a smart board. My students use it for learning games, reading, go noodle, and classroom DOJO. Students in the upper grades may be better off with their own I pads and laptops because they are more independent. I think I pads and new technology are nice for younger grades such as kindergarten and first grade but it may be too much to monitor or very distracting for a young one to stay on task. In my opinion, I do not think they should be replaces but it would benefit some grades to have more independent technology.

With the growing demand for technology growing around the world each day, we have become reliant upon it. The tech market is has forged its way into our everyday lives, making life easier. This explains the growth in its demand. Let’s face it, we are a lazy generation, and the tech world is our bib. Which brings me to technology in education. With techs changing hand students need to have access to all aspects of technology within their educational experience. IWB’s contribute in assisting the facilitator to interactively engage the students digitally. Although, technology has an effective way in advancing the learning experience and keeping students current with technology, tech also has a way in which it makes students antisocial during a learning experience. Students go off independently and have a lack of live interactions with fellow classmates. Which brings me to the prompted collaborations created by IWB’s for whole class interactions and engagement. This overall helps a teacher bring students together in a learning environment.

I think that we have to be really careful when choosing technology that can be used for educational purposes. It has to be used in a way to help students learn and not make it complicated or hard to use. Educational technology specifically. If we just follow the brand names it wouldn't be a great variety of choices left for students, or teachers.

I love having the ability to use the IWB's when they are operable. But for the most part IWB's can be found throughout schools as paper hangers, well at least the portable one. The one's attached to the wall and mounted on the wall are easy to work with but the one problem is location, location and location, along with not enough outlets or properly place outlets. You have extension cords all around the room. The school building need to be updated so that the technology can be easily accessed throughout the building. I believe infrastructure needs to be started first so that their are no issues or hindrances in the classroom.

Technology is important in the classroom today, but I feel like sometimes schools take it a little to far with what they expect from the children because of all this new technologies available. Using laptops and white boards etc is all good, gives children more interactive way to learn and keep them up to date with videos and access articles much quicker, but I do believe a lot more is expected from the children because of the availability which may be very overwhelming for them. I still believe that at times paper, pen and access to physical library is very important to the development of the child, all this money should not be thrown only on technologically advancing the school.

IWB's are now called Smart Boards or in the case of my school, Permethean Boards. Each classroom has one and teachers are expected to use them. The students in my school love them and tend to be more interested in the lessons being taught. This boards do everything a smart phone can do and the students are more versed in using them than the teachers are. We also have tablets that are used for the purpose of research and such, they however have a short lifespan because students tend to drop them and damage them. I put my money on the Smart board. I have had the experience of working with an IWB and without one. An IWB is only as useful as the person operating it. Many IWB's are mounted in classrooms being used like an over priced chalkboard and/or television set. Many teachers are not trained effectively or refuse to enter the world of the 21st Century learner and teacher. My current principal decided to buy large Smart TVs instead for our new school building. She felt they were cost effective and could be utilized appropriately and effectively with the needs of our student population. This decision saved her thousands of dollars that could be used to enhance programs across the board for our school. Patricia Brodersen 650

IWB have their own unique functionality and as such comparing them to individual tablets is an apples to oranges issue. A great part of learning is the communal element and I think the IWB is more suited to this task than the tablets and laptops are. I have seen excellent interactive lessons executed in classrooms with IWBs and I have also observed school environments where they are highly underutilized. I believe it is safe to say that any technology is only as effective as the person who is harnessing its components. Before we are ready to give the IWBs a report card, it is imperative to ensure that educators are effectively trained and retrained. Additionally instead of making the tablet the nemesis of the IWB I think the tablets and laptops can be more of support tools where children can now do the individual work explored in the group activity with the IWB.

I believe IWB's are a great tool to help children learn. Interactively using modern technology as we live in an era where technology is fast paste and unlike any other tool of its time. I believe all schools should be supplied and updated with these new advances however much attention and care should be payed to the systems once used. I suggest creating a room or workshop for less modern technologies that students can still work with. Parents and people of the community with none or hardly any computer literacy can come in and make use of these systems. Furthermore, I support using smart boards in classrooms, to help children learn however many more factors in such as teacher training, time and the cost of these technologies.

In discussing the article I feel that the IWB's are over priced and not as effective as having a tablet. I feel that the traditional computer labs and/or tablets would be a better approach. Many teachers are not using the IWB's for lack of training or for fear of changing their teaching style. I also feel that for budgeting reasons the IWB's are not brand spanking new technology, to warrant the price, the IPAD's are definitely the way to go. They are portable and they can be updated and allow students a hands on approach. Many teachers need to be updated on technology and taught how to incorporate this technology into their lesson plans. If implemented the lessons come to life for the students and allow them be interactive and integral part of the lesson.

I believe that IWB can be used as an edition instrument to improve a lesson, to create group activities, to visualize any information. In my opinion, IWBs should be installed in every classroom. It's a great way to engage students in the classroom.

It is true that everyone want to go with what to go with the trend but determining whether to make a new purchase and discontinue the use of what is currently in use depends on several factors. as it relates to schools, these organizations operate with budgets and objectives. Consequently, the use of the IWB may be utilizes based on the opportunity for interactive purposes. Students are more savvy about the use of the tablets but will recognize features and nee encouragement. Schools need to examine the cost effectiveness and the ability of the devices to meet their objectives.

Many people will think IWB is "Old" technology in classroom, but we can't deny this whiteboard device is useful for large groups in classroom because its size and educators can use it to encourage students having social interaction. However, many teachers complain that IWB is not applicable with many new application they create for student's needs. Updated IWB is also expensive and training teachers costs time and money. If we can provide students each tablet which is more effective on learning and teaching. also, it is cheaper, why not ?
If it didn’t make teaching my required curriculum any easier. I probably crate two or three neat lessons with it, but there was nothing unique about those activities. I could have easily put together similar lessons using the computer stations I already have in my classroom, Why do we need IWB? Ting Ting Yen

As a parent I remember the first time I saw a IWB. It was over 10 years ago. I was enamored! I thought 'WHOA!!' this is amazing! At the time I was working in higher ed and my view was slightly narrowed. I didn't think about the teacher and how it would be incorporated into the classroom effectively. IWBs were and in some cases still are considered the best invention since sliced bread.
But now that we have tablets, laptops and smartphones they seem slightly antiquated. I think that its a great tool in the classroom, but not every classroom. Places I think this would best utilized is in Science, English and possibly Math. The board's interactive feature will help and can have software/tools integrated to assist students. With the introduction of so many apps nowadays that can be used on smartphones, its going to come down to a personal preference for the educator.
I don't think we should just throw away the IWBs, but I do think we have to discuss and decide on best practices and how to transition to using newer more up-to-date software as well.

I grew up in classrooms that had IWB's. I thought it was a great tool to have in the classroom. Teachers enjoyed teaching the students on it and I enjoyed learning with it. It may be an outdated tech tool, but I think it's still an effective teaching tool. I don't feel schools should get rid of them, but use them in addition to newer technologies such as iPad's.

Honestly, before I even could continue reading, I had to google the meaning of an IWB, as I did not know what it meant. It really is true that no matter how good we think a piece of technology is, they will always come out with something better and replace the old technology. It is a cycle that has always happened, happens now, and will continue to happen in the future. I remember when smartboards first came out, both impressive and confusing. However, I agree, it is important to analyze how we are going to use existing technology and re-purpose it when applicable. Sometimes people become blinded by shiny new toys, and that is not always what is best.

I found this to be a very interesting read. I have noticed that IWBs are the "old" category, which I find to be insane since it was not that long ago that we were first in awe at the very idea of one. This just proves that the times are changing fast and technology is advancing at a fast pace. I also believe that it should still be used in classrooms if to stay on a safe budget technically this is a good type of technology to have if certain schools who may be under a tight budget can still have quality material and technology to use as their resources to continue to educate the youth.

As you stated, I believe a school should analyze the technology before throwing it out. I have had experience where administrators and principles just throw out new flat screen TVs and Ipad's just because. Because they have money in the budget. That money should be used toward something that is much more in need, in my opinion.

I actually did not now what IWB stood for. I had to google it. My current school used Smart-boards but not all are interactive. Some are extremely old and just project images and others are updated.

Lastly, I think an IWB or something of that sort can be beneficial int he class and can keep the students engages.

This was very interesting! I definitely see both points regarding IWB. In my opinion, IWB's are great when presenting material to a whole class. It all comes in handy for children to interact as well as keep them engaged. Students enjoy going up to the IWB and using the markers, this keeps them motivated and focused on the task so that they can be called to the board. Also, I think tablets and laptops are great when it comes to individual work but on a larger scale, IWB's I think are more practical.

i liked this article but not really agree with it because each time a new IWB technology comes out it just makes the students lazy, but on the other hand it also helps them to develop so it think that children should use both.

I am not really familiar with IWB's as our school did not use them, but I believe they are great to introduce a lesson and make it interactive for students, as well. On the other hand, I believe that iPad's are great for students too, given the many options they have. You can easily build apps in them and nowadays educators have built many educational apps and share them with their colleagues for free. The biggest advantage the iPad's have is the fact that they give access to students with disabilities. You can enlarge the screen, you can use dictation and voice over which are a great help for many students who face challenges.
I believe that IWB's should stay in the classroom and continue to be used along with iPad-s, using each for their own best features.

I am not very familiar with the IWB, but reading the article, I do understand and agree that it would be a smart move for the schools to not jump immediately to the new technology just because is new and more advance. I agree that the schools should take in consideration their funds and also to maximize the use of the technology that they already have in use.

IWB's are a great technological tool to use in the classroom. They were completely new to me while I was in High School and in the students' eyes, they were the hottest thing around. We were so excited when they installed them in our classrooms and couldn't wait to use them. Now from the teacher perspective, I get the same excitement. The thing to be weary about is how teachers use them in the classroom. I have seen a lot of teachers that are afraid or just "can't learn this technology stuff." Therefor they are not using the IWB's to the best of their ability. They need to take the time to learn the system before using it in the classroom.

I strongly believe that an IWB works in the classroom will be useful to have it. However, if the IWB dos not work at all should be replace by another new or another with more capacity which can provide more effectiveness in the classroom development. I still remember a teacher trying to fix the IWB which was in her classroom, every single day she was facing the same problem. She felt so frustrated because it does not work at all. In cases like this one, these kind of technology should be replaced in the classroom for a new one or another more sophisticated.

I think IWB's are still relevant and needed in a classroom. It allows for teachers to teach without students being distracted with their own device. Younger children can benefit from learning from a smartboard and in a young classroom, an IWB only requires the teacher to know how to use the technology.

Although I do not know a lot about IWB I do feel that you are right in your article. Why must we get rid of technology that still works? I feel that the education system is rushing to prove that we can succeed but maybe instead of getting new technology we can have better training's on the current.
