Superman, and the Moral Imperative of Honor in Humility

Growing up in the 1970s, I was exposed to a healthy dose of Superman movies, cartoons, and of course comic books. Ocassionally comic fans would debate "if Superman was to powerful?" After all. old Supes was pretty much invulnerable, could travel back and forth in time, and then some. So, eventually they did a Supes reboot around 1986. It was probably good for the franchise. Having said that, it not only took away some of his powers. It took away something else away from Supes; the importance of humility and honor.

The old Superman played the role of mild mannered Clark Kent. Throughout, the series, Supes was constantly challenged to protect the ones he loved; yet be humble about it. He had to keep a moral balance and understand that his powers did not give him the license to change the course of past events or world affairs; no matter how good his intentions were. It wasn't about whether he would defeat Lex Luthor again. Rather, it was about holding true to the moral imperative of using your powers with good judgment even when tempted to do otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, I still love the Supes series. I just feel it is a shame that it lost a bit of its focus on the honor of humility. Anyhow... I am not sure exactly how I should close this note, so UP, UP, AND AWAY!!!
