The Flash Point, Chapter 0.5, You Can’t Make this Stuff Up

My father decided to run for congress against a popular incumbent. Go figure. Keep in mind, this is not the first time he has tried this stunt. Over the past 12 years, he has run for congress on 4 different occasions. During each attempt he would use 1 central issue for his platform. One time it was gun control, another time it was abortion, and another time it was all about food stamps.

To date his campaigns have never captured more than 9 percent of the popular vote. I suppose he envisions himself as some kind of populist. This time around he wants to target 2 issues health care and drilling for oil. He believes two issues will double the number of his votes. I sure hope he knows what he is doing.

The Flash Point, Chapter 0.4, Sister Can You Spare a Law Suit

Don’t get June Brittel mad. She is a ruthless personal injury lawyer who never loses. From a young age June, fancied herself a lawyer. She used to watch all the TV shows involving law practice, would read law books for fun, and always managed to play the role of lawyer at the school productions.

Mom always said, she could talk her way out of any problem. Her teachers often shrugged her shoulders, as she always seemed to have the answer to any challenge thrown her way. I will never forget when she threw a chair out the window, got caught, and used legal logic to justify her actions. It is therefore no surprise, that she graduated high school 1 year early, obtained a law degree in record time, started her own personal injury firm, and like I said before has never lost a case.

The Flash Point, Chapter 0.3, Another Brick in the Wall

Meet Carena Brittel; wife of Jack Brittel and 4th grade teacher at John Dewey Elementary School. Jack was her high school sweetheart. They both attended different high schools in different states. They met each other at spring break and hit it off instantly. Those were the days long before Twitter and FaceBook. So… they would write letters to each other at least 3 times a week. Their parents thought this long distance relationship would never work. However, despite the doubters, Jack and Carena prevailed, and married ten years later.

Many of Carena friends still can’t believe she married the greasy rocker form her high school days. Carena always says, she doesn’t look back, loves her kids, loves her husband. However, there was a time, there was another man. After Jack’s mom died, he travelled the world for three years to find himself. During this time he visited India, Germany, Russia, London, and Africa. He was part of a special college program which had aspiring musicians study each semester in a different part of the world during which they studied music under a professional in the business. This experience was great for Jack as it gave him a broader perspective of the music world at large.

However, the travel years were very difficult for Carena. Subsequently, during Jack’s third semester she ended their relationship. A few months later, she met James Weber. James was 5 years her senior, working on his educational doctorate, and was conducting fascinating research on how technology could be used to aid autistic children. Needless to say, Carena was quite taken by James. However, in due time, Carena would learn about the difficulties of dating the eccentric genius. At the same time, Jack was in the process of finding himself. In finding himself, Jack flew across the Atlantic to reclaim Carena.

And so it was. Jack would marry Carena, have 2 children, purchase a three bedroom house, and vest their time in their respective careers. However, many of Carena’s friends wonder if she was being fair to James. What if Carena had been more patient with James? Would things have turned out differently? One can only wonder…

The Flash Point, Chapter 0.2, Take the Long Way Home

At first glance, the graveyard shift at a radio station seems horrible. After all, who wants to work those hours? Talk about howling at the moon. However, it does it have its advantages. Driving to work is really smooth as there is virtually no traffic at the midnight hour. It also works with my fitness lifestyle. After, I finish my shift; I jog a few laps around the park and head home. Actually, I jog home as I live close by. This is a good thing as it gives me time to help the wife with the kids and send them off to school. After, the kids go to school; I sleep for about 6 hours. At least I try to.

The Flash Point, Chapter 0.1- Juke Box Hero

Meet Jack Brittel; DJ at WROK from 2-6 AM during the weekdays. He has held that slot on the station for 9 years. His shift usually beats the other nighttime radio stations. The job offers a decent wage and although the hours are odd, how many people can say they work 4 hours a day.

Of course, being a DJ wasn’t his dream job. He set out to be the next Bon Jovi or Bruce Springsteen. Like many other adolescents of his time, he was a part of a high school rock band, took guitar lessons, played bar mitzvahs, weddings, and bars. During the early 1990’s rock music was on its way out as hip-hop music was quickly becoming the music teens wanted to hear. This did not bode well for Jack as this environment assured that his talents were largely ignored.

In the early years, he submitted numerous audition tapes only to be rejected time and time again. Eventually, he tried out being a disc jockey. For some reason his DJ work was well received. He even had the good fortune to provide backing vocals for a few musicians producing records. During the past few years Jack has been trying to land a morning or afternoon slot on WROK and has made himself available to fill-in for vacationing/ and or ill DJs. So far, this effort has not materialized any results. Still, Jack wonders what would it be like…

Look Out Madonna!!

As an avid jogger, I change my music playlist on a regular basis as hearing the same music day after day is definitely an “exercise killer”. With this in mind, I clicked on the iTunes <

I proceeded to sample Kings of Leon, The Boxer Rebellion, Lady GaGa, Jay-Z, and several other artists. Each of the artists had a few tracks that were enjoyable; however, in many cases it sounded… old. Old in the sense, that they were not covering any new territory. For example, rap music has been on the scene for close to 30 years and the best of this year’s rap or hip-hop seemed to be recycled. The notable exception to this is the Black Eyed Peas who continues to innovate the genre with its fusion of rock-hip-hop music with electronica. Similarly, U2’s and Springsteen’s latest efforts are enjoyable, but not jog worthy. Go figure, Springsteen decides to put out a mellow album this year.

Anyhow… I sampled Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” and was instantly transported back to the 1980’s. I continued to sample additional tracks and was enjoying the fast and hard pace of the music. More importantly, the music worked great on my run and at the gym. Clearly, the use of synthesized funk, electronica, and Madonna like vocals pays off in a big way. Having said that, I will forewarn you some of the tracks are a bit raunchy. Additionally, if you never liked Madonna, you will hate this music. On the other hand if you enjoyed 80’s pop and Madonna’s music go GaGa now.

The Flash Point, Chapter 6

FROM THE PRIVATE BLOG OF JACK BRITTEL

ENTRY, December 20, 2010

Over the years other strange occurrences happened like the day I became a great baseball player. For some reason, on this particular day I was performing amazing catches and hit 2 grand slams. This was all very strange top me as I had always been a lousy player and now I was playing like I was Babe Ruth and Dwight Gooden rolled into one. Then as quickly as this strange luck came it dissipated just as quickly. In no time, I was back to dropping balls.

A similar incident happened with bowling, karate, soccer, and football. The football incident was really bizarre as I somehow tackled a 250-pound player. So as you can see the flash point is not easily explained. I really do not what it is. I do know that the flashpoint definitely does exist. The evidence is irrefutable, as these strange stories do not fit the norm. I have also concluded that my mother must have experienced this phenomenon at some time in her life. I believe that I am just scratching the surface, that there is more to the flash point. The problem is, how one knows when, where, and how the flashpoint is occurring. If I would only get a sign; this would definitely help.

It has also become painfully clear that my mother did not share the flash point phenomena with any other family members; even my father. Naturally this makes me wonder, why she would only share it only with her eldest son. On one hand I am extremely flattered. On the other hand, well I really don’t know, do I? That is probably most exhilarating and scary item of this flash point concept.

Clearly the flashpoint is an enigma in itself. My mom never mentioned the flashpoint until the very end of her life. It was the last conversation I had with her. Often I wonder if the flashpoint reference was a result of the medicine she was taking to fight the cancer. After all, at the end of the day, I am a pretty grounded person who does not believe in hokey pokey stuff. Then again, my mom was one of the most grounded people I knew. Additionally, her conversation with me on that night was quite lucid.

The Flash Point, Chapter 5

FROM THE PRIVATE BLOG OF JACK BRITTEL

ENTRY- December 17, 2010

Occasionally, I believe that a person in a cloak is watching over me. I am almost sure that the cloak is similar to the one of my dreams from so many years go. This makes me wonder. What if the dream is true? What if my mom never died, walks among us in secret, watching over her children? Perhaps it’s a young boy’s wish, perhaps its not. Of course, I understand that these kinds of secrets can never be shared. What would the world ever think, if they knew? And so, I keep this to myself.

Many times when I jog in the morning I reflect on what was, and what could be if in fact the flashpoint really does exist. At the same time, I understand this is not a world that accepts different. It is a world that was built and survives on conforming. No mater how stupid it is, you must conform. Because at the end of the day all we have are our rules. Our precious little rules really seem to be quite the rage.

10 Cool Things I Discovered in 2009

Another year is quickly coming to an end. With this in mind, I share with you a few things I learned about this year.

#10- http://pbskids.org/electriccompany/#/games/escapes/ Electric Company on the Internet- This is a fun way to expose your children to building sentences. I will also note that the pbskids.org has a bunch of interesting educational games on the Internet. Obviously, the games and resources vary in quality. Despite that, it is definitely worth your time looking at.

#9- Wii Fit- There has been much hype about this product. Having said that, it is a fun product that is helping many people get into shape. However, I should forewarn you that when you run the initial fitness profile, it will tell you that your fitness level is comparable to someone that is 10-20 years older than you. Do not get insulted. It probably means that you are not familiar with how to use a Wii. Subsequently, it is giving you a lower fitness rating. The important thing is to have fun.

#8- http://www.kutoka.com/_en/products_mia_reading.html Mia- Mia is a cute little mouse that offers young children an engaging platform to learn literacy, math, and science. Mia involves higher order thinking skills and does not distract children with too many non-educational tasks yet is very engaging. You will not be able to find this software easily as it is a French import.

#7- Guitar Hero and its Spawn- Not only is this game very entertaining it’s a great way to learn how to play music.

#6- The secret to buying trains- If you have a 8 year old boy who loves trains avoid buying the smaller trains. While the smaller scale trains are cheaper, they are not easy for a growing boy to handle. O Scale is the way to go. For more info check outhttp://www.trainworldonline.com/.

#5- http://faujsa.fau.edu/jsa/home.php Jewish Music Archive- A great collection of Jewish music

#4- http://www.pandora.com Pandora.com- A great web application that allows you to create your own customized music channels

#3- Wayne Steel- Its All About Chanukah- Last year a musician passed me along his CD. In short, the CD went to my bag of CDs that people give me. Anyhow… long story short, I did some cleaning around the house and discovered this gem just in time for Chanukah. For more details, check out http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/waynesteele

#2- Blogging and rediscovering my writing roots- For the past 12 years I have been writing grants as a part of my job. Thankfully, most of these grants becoming award winning grants and schools/districts directly benefit from my efforts. While this was going on, I have been trying to figure out when, where, how, did I learn to write. Certainly, I did not major in English. Well… blogging helped me rediscover that it all started writing for fun. With this in mind, I am glad to jump on the blogging bandwagon as it has proven to be a great forum to express a variety of ideas. To see my blog visit http://thefutureofeducationaltechnology.blogspot.com/

The awesome power of FileMaker Pro- A few months ago one of my schools needed help building a database that would help them create customized goals for their students. They also wanted the database to include the following features; multiple pull down menus- e.g. Grade selection provides a choices of classes and then provides a choice of students, parent letter generator, the ability to set up to 20 customized goals, report card generator, and of course easy navigation. Needless to say. a learning curve was involved with this process. Interestingly enough, none of the manuals really explained how to do this. In the end, one of my Apple reps hooked me up with a FileMaker Pro rep from the UK. He then explained me that the best way to learn this was to an existing sample file and cannibalize it. It took me 3 hours to figure out what I was looking at. Three hours later I figured out how to define relationships in FileMaker Pro. This in turn proved to be the catalyst for developing the database. Along the way, I learned some more cool FileMaker tricks and I am excited that this database will only become more powerful.

The Flash Point, Chapter 4

FROM THE PRIVATE BLOG OF JACK BRITTEL

ENTRY, December 14, 2010

Shortly after my mother passed away, I had a number of strange dreams involving the flashpoint. For starters, in my dream my mom never died of cancer. In actuality, she was near death and was rushed to a hospital in the former Soviet Union as they developed a new experimental medicine not legal in the states. Since the medicine was considered controversial, no one including my father knew of this. Subsequently, she was in hiding for several years.

In the meantime, my father got re-married. Unfortunately, the second wife turned out to be an ice queen. Even more disconcerting, the new woman in his life was wreaking havoc and was causing all kinds of problems. In 3 short months, she had convinced my father that two of my brothers should receive psychiatric treatment. Needless to say, this was a pretty dire situation. My uncle had tried to put a stop to this but had no luck. To be truthful, the situation seemed hopeless. Then the strangest thing happened… I had a dream in which my dead mother came to me in a dream. This dream was very different as it was first dream in which she directly spoke to me. She approached to me in a dark cloak and at first I did not know it was her. However, she then lifted the cloak and revealed herself and stated, “this is all wrong. Something must be done to put a stop to this.” The bizarre thing is, I came back that night and my father had divorced the ice queen. Just like that.

Another strange incident that comes to mind is the baseball card incident. As the story goes, I was working on my science fair project. For some reason my Science teacher decided to give me five baseball cards as a reward for a job well done. So far the story seems plain enough. Ironically, I was one of those kids who didn’t care about baseball. So I’m thinking what I am going to do with these 5 baseball cards. Not knowing what to do I decide to play one of those games where the kids flick the card against the wall and the winner takes the entire pot. Needless to say, I did not know what I was doing. However, somehow I won that pot and another 55 games consecutively. In two short weeks, I had a shoebox filled of baseball cards. Then one day, I stopped winning. After losing quite a few rounds, I called it quits. This story is pretty bizarre, as it appears that I was riding some kind of wave. Perhaps the flash point is a wave in which it powers can yield fantastic results. However, as soon as you lose balance, the flash point is over. Needless to say, this very strange occurrence only fascinated me with the flashpoint and what it might represent.

The Flash Point, Chapter 2

FROM THE PRIVATE BLOG OF JACK BRITTEL

Entry December 4, 2010

As I mentioned earlier, understanding the Flash Point is very difficult. I remember various times during my life that some unique incidents occurred. These unique events are truly unexplainable; yet they did happen. I am always drawn back to my memories of being 3 years old and being unhappy in the school my parents placed me in. Anyhow… to make a long story short, by communicating my unhappiness they ultimately removed me from that school. This story on the surface sounds ordinary but hardly is. You may say, so what it sounds pretty plain- unhappy kid changes school- so what gives?? I distinctly remember the interactions in that foul school and how I confronted my parents with this issue.

Clearly, this is unusual as young children –especially 3 years olds do not have such memories with such clarity. Yet this particular point of my life I remember with such vivid detail. From the checkered green and white floors; to the independent psychologist who interceded on my behalf, I remember it all. It almost seems as if this was meant to happen. Of course it is possible that my so-called memories of this watershed event are supplanted by my parents’ reminiscent discussions of this event, as they were amazed that there 3-year-old son would take such a stand. Yet at the same time, I actually remember both; the post-discussions my parents had about this event and my own individualized account of the occurrence. Even stranger many of the events that occurred afterwards are fairly hazy. I do vaguely remember being happy in the new school. Yet this is all I remember. It’s almost as if the flashpoint came and went.

The Flash Point, Chapter 1

FROM THE PRIVATE BLOG OF JACK BRITTEL

Entry, December 1, 2010

It has been said many times that there are certain turning points in life in which all that you hold dear can change in an instant. The trick of course is to know when one of these moments is coming. My mom once spoke of this phenomenon. She referred to it as “the flash point”. As she saw it, a flash point comes in many forms. It can be a dream, an inspiration, an opportunity, or perhaps a last chance. Most importantly, it is almost impossible to define and it is just as difficult to know when the flash point is coming. Having this knowledge is dangerous, as one will be incited to seek the flashpoint wishing to harness its power and in the process possibly manufacture a fictional flash point.

Those were my mother’s dying words. Twenty years later, I still do not pretend to understand the meaning of these words. These words are both scary and intriguing. It should come to you as no surprise that I have searched for the flash point. True to form, I have analyzed various past events trying to determine if these were flash points. But as my mom would say, seeking the flash point is a game played by fools with danger on their agenda. Despite it all, I am still fascinated by the flashpoint.

Here’s Looking at You Bobby Jean

This past Sunday I attended a retirement party of a former boss. As expected, it was a trip down memory lane. I saw many faces I hadn’t seen in more than 6 years. We talked about the old days, asked about how our families were faring, and wished each other good wishes. It was good to see old friends, as I never had a chance to bring good tidings to all of my colleagues and former supervisors when many of us moved on to new employment venues.

As this nostalgic event was taking place I wondered, “Am I expressing the appropriate sentiments?” After all, what do you say to the boss who gave a young adult a chance at supervision more than 12 years ago? What do you say to the supervisor who gave you the push to pursue more ambitious projects? What do you say to the supervisor who believed in you?

In the end, I said the following. “Congratulations on your retirement. Thank you for everything. Words alone cannot express my gratitude.” Now I understood, what Bruce Springsteen was trying to say when he sung Bobby Jean. Through the course of our life, we all meet and become good friends with Bobby Jean. Sometimes Bobby Jean is a caring supervisor, sometimes Bobby is your mentor, and sometimes Bobby is a great friend. However, regardless of the context we miss Bobby Jean’s friendship. So in closing, I share the following…

Well I came by your house the other day, your mother said you went away

She said there was nothing that I could have done

There was nothing nobody could say

Me and you we've known each other ever since we were sixteen

I wished I would have known I wished I could have called you

Just to say goodbye bobby jean

Totally Redux, Chapter 4-Blue Light

I said, “Arcade World? What’s an arcade?” The man in the yellow tights said, “Hmm, I guess I am dating myself. I forget that they stopped calling it Arcade Games a few years back. Anyhow, its what you refer to as video games, and Arcade World is part of what makes all these games possible. In Arcade World, Pac Man lives, Wii is a one of the newer countries recently founded, and Arcade Man governs this world.”

I then asked, “Who is Arcade Man?” Arcade Man said, “It is I. In fact, I have been running Arcade World since 1959 or roughly 60 years. In recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to protect Arcade World from its enemies. With this in mind, I have been looking for a successor for the past few years. I believe you can be that person.”

Needless to say, I was perplexed by this conversation. An Arcade World that controls all the video games we play? Talk about strange. “So, how does this work exactly? And why me Arcade Man?” Arcade Man said, “I have watched you for a long time and you have the gift.” “What gift?” “The gift of becoming one with the arcade and fixing all that has been damaged.” “Arcade Man, I don’t understand.” Arcade Man said, “Do you see the strobing blue light? Focus on it, you will become one with Arcadia, and all will be explained.”

Hi Ho! Hi Ho! It’s Off to the Computer we Go!

The other day my son was watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on his computer. I told him, “You know when your mommy and daddy were your age, we saw this movie too.” He responded, “Did you watch it on your computer too?” I responded, “No, we saw it in a movie theater.” He responded, “Why?” We then proceeded to explain that computers were not commonplace until our teen years. He then responded, “Wow, that must be from the old days.”

Having said that, I love watching what my son does and learns on his computer. The other week I installed Toon Town on his computer; a web based Disney application, which presents the user with a number of challenges. Needless to say he sprung into action and seems to be enjoying it. My son also uses the web to learn interesting facts about the NYC subway system and some of the old time train such as the Santa Fe line as well as other areas of interest. It goes without saying that he visits a variety of other web sites, plays with photo editing software, utilizes a variety of drawing tools, plays a variety of educational games, and watches videos on his computer. With this in mind, I am pleased to say that I am very impressed with the built in Parental Controls on the Apple Computer. The Parental Controls allow me to decide which applications my son can use, configure iTunes to show only content that is rated G and Y-7, configure the web browser with similar restrictions, set time limits for computer usage, and enables the parent to review how their child uses the computers through user logs.

Naturally, nothing beats the parent working with their child on the computer and I consider myself very fortunate to have had plenty of opportunities to do this. In fact, this undoubtedly helped me have a better understanding of how to customize the computer to maximize my son’s learning environment. However, I also understand the importance of allowing your child to use his/her computer independently. At the same time it is important to have a mechanism of ensuring that he/she is working is a safe computing environment. To this end, I am a fan of the Parental Controls provided through Apple Computer and I am fairly confident my wife will second that motion.

Run for fun? What the hell kind of fun is that?

Many times when I mention to people that I jog every day, they seem surprised. The expression on their face says, “Why would you do that to yourself?” Other reactions include, “I give you credit”, “Wow you must be tired”, and of course the all time favorite “So are you still keeping up with that running thing?”

Having said that, I think its safe to say that most people understand the obvious benefit of exercise. Clearly, there have been countless studies citing how good it is for you. So why are a majority of people not donning running shorts and jogging. In short, there is a perception that exercise is boring. So is running boring? Is weight lifting boring? Is exercise boring? The answer to this question is, only if you allow it to be boring. Simply put, the iPod or a myriad of portable music devices can transform a walk or jog into a memorable experience. An experience you will look forward to on a daily basis.

As I jog around Marine Park approximately 8 times, my iPod plays Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, The Beastie Boys, Prince, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Run DMC, Sir Mix A Lot, Matisyahu, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Panic at the Disco, Supremes, Temptations, Tom Petty, ELO, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Wham, Weird Al, and too many other musicians to list here. By listening to a variety of music styles, it keeps the run interesting as each run has a different feel thanks to the new music. Additionally, I like to mix it up. Run a fast lap, run a slow lap, run in the snow, run in the rain, run in the wind, and run with your eyes closed.

So… in closing, get an iPod and go jogging. You might surprise yourself and discover that running is fun.

Please Don't Let me be Misunderstood- A Child's Perspective

They look at my face

And say, is he in outer space

They say, what a waste

He’s playing with toothpaste

I say, look at me

Walking on my knee

Bet you think it’s crummy

I think it’s very funny

I have been call wild

I am the autistic child

Don’t expect me to speak

Just because you say eek

Don’t be in a funk

Because I play with junk

Some think I am a foolish prancer

They don’t know I grow up to cure cancer

Totally Redux, Chapter 3- At the Ruins of Arcadia

A few minutes ago a gorilla and some elderly wrestlers were chasing me. In a blink of an eye, this all changed. I am currently piloting a spaceship towards a grey moon. Wait!! That’s no moon! I think that’s a space station. This all seems too familiar. For some reason, I am navigating my ship across a narrow pathway. I am not sure why I am inclined to do this. Perhaps I am trying to dodge the spaceships behind me. Ooh!! That was close!! Those spaceships mean business. This targeting computer might help me. Apparently, it seems to directing me forward and wants me to target a nuclear reactor. This day is just getting weirder and weirder.

I wonder what will happen next. Boom!!! I was hit by something. Boom!!! I have been hit again. Shields are down to 60%. Boom!!! Boom!!! What keeps hitting me? Uh Oh!! I think I’m flying in an asteroid field. I better think of something fast. My shields are down to 25%. Let me try flying into that cave.

Crash!!! The space ship is gone. I am now on what appears to be the set of Dance Dance Revolution. I am informed that Sponge Bob is challenging me to a dance contest. I proceed to start dancing when… ZAP!!!! I am holding a guitar in my hand and appear to be on stage with Guns and Roses. I attempt to play guitar and fail miserably. I guess Guitar Hero makes it look easy. Zoom!!! Zing!!! Clack!!! All the lights are off. A man wearing a green cape, yellow tights, with a big A emblem on his chest, and silver sunglasses approaches me and says, “Welcome to Arcade World. I have been expecting you.”

19 Years Later… I Still Remember

According to the Hebrew Calendar my mother passed away 19 years ago today. Needless to say, this time of the year can be rough, as a flood of memories long forgotten instantly comes back. These memories include my mother’s last days, her 5-year struggle with ovarian cancer, the early years, as well as other memorable events. I remember her teaching me to drive and how she was always very interested in my well-being as only a mother could. I still remember our trip together in Boston as it was to be our first and last mother and son trip.

According to Jewish tradition, one commemorates the anniversary by going to synagogue and says kadaish (recite the mourners prayer). As such, I wondered in my mind should I share this experience with my 8 year old and have him participate in the services. After much thought, I took him along tonight. Naturally, I explained to him in a “child-friendly” way what was happening. At first, he was a bit fidgety. However, after several gentle reminders he became attentive and participated with the appropriate amen. In short, it was one of the most moving experiences I ever witnessed. In short, I know my mom would be proud of Simcha’s actions. I know I am.

Where Have All the PacMen Gone?

Totally Redux, Chapter 2

I still couldn’t believe this was happening. It was my room, but it wasn’t. It was my father and my uncle, only younger. I had seen a few pictures of them looking like this and a goofy You Tube video of them jumping in a little blue pool. However, this was just too weird. I also did not enjoy being holed up in a closet. Finally, the 1980’s version of my father and uncle left the room. I noticed that the window was unlocked. So… I quickly climbed out the window.

I walked to the front of the house through the driveway and looked around. I kept worrying, “what if I bumped into someone that knows me?” It then occurred to me that I wasn’t born until the 1990’s. I started to walk through the neighborhood. Many of the stores looked newer. Gina’s Supermarket never looked better or cleaner. Cedar Lanes looked run down though. I suppose that makes sense as the bowling alley was fixed about 10 years ago in my timeline. I entered the bowling alley and rushed to see the arcade games. They all cost 25 cents and included games like Ms. Pacman, Frogger, Pole Position, and Space Invaders. As expected, the graphics looked cheesy and the games look archaic and not very challenging. It’s funny, when you think about it. My dad always talked about how great these games were and how it was a big part of his childhood. In any case, my curiosity got the best of me and I played Ms. Pacman. I plopped the quarter in the machine and started playing.

Several hours passed, I still had 2 lives left, and had scored 555,200 points. I continued to play and soon surpassed 600,000 points. Suddenly, the game started shaking and all the lights went out. Needless to say, this disoriented me. However, I noticed a small gleaming light around the corner. The lights consisted of white circular lights and pink rectangles. A closer look revealed that the lights were arranged in a maze like form. In fact, it looked like a life size Ms. Pacman board. Pinky, Inky, and Clyde were roaming around the board, but no Ms. PacMan. I ran as quickly as I could and exited the game board only to land in a game in which I had to dodge cars while crossing the street. Shortly afterwards, I was on a pyramid like cube jumping from box to box and then dodged barrels thrown by an ape.

Earlier today, I thought I was stuck in the 1980s. Now, I seem to be trapped in a variety of old school arcade games. Could this day get any stranger?

Totally Redux

I was an ordinary kid sitting at my laptop surfing the internet, playing video games, and playing Guitar Hero. As I was surfing the net, I came across a page that said, “Get ready for something different, experience the birth of technology, the Total Redux Experience.” Naturally, I clicked on the link. At first nothing much happened. The hourglass icon spun as if it were trying to load something.
After a few minutes of this, I started to lose my patience and so I proceeded to close the Internet window. However, my computer wasn’t cooperating. Simply put, the window would not close. So… I tried again with no luck. Suddenly, the room started to shake. It occurred to me that this might be an earthquake and proceeded to grip the wall. The shaking continued for a few more minutes and I continued to hold on to the wall.
After the shaking stopped I let go of the wall and started to look around. The room looked a little different. The furniture seemed newer and the laptop was replaced by some kind of old fashioned computer. There was a game called Jump Man on the screen. Judging from the name of the game the objective seemed fairly obvious. The graphics on this computer looked cheesy and were played using a funny looking disk. After a few minutes of this, I decided I had enough. I quit the game and a blue screen replaced the Jump Man screen.
As I stared at the blue screen, I heard voices coming from the other room. I quickly hid in the closet as I did not know what to expect. Two boys in their teen years entered the room both sporting mullet hairdos. They both looked very familiar; especially the one on the right. I could be mistaken; that boy looks like my father and the other boy looks like my uncle- sort of.
The two teens started to chat. “Who put Jump Man in?” “Probably our dorky little brother.” The two teens started playing other games and then left the room. I pinched myself to make sure this was real. Regardless, I needed to figure out what was happening…

Chapter 2- Rendezvous at Fort Square

During the next few months my powers would continue to emerge. I was now able to run 200 miles an hour, shoot lightning from my hands with great ease, and turn myself into a blob of flame. Obviously, the flame trick was not useful, as it would set my clothes on fire. At the same time, my accelerated metabolism helped me lose approximately 90 pounds during this time. I also joined the gym as I figured it would help me with my superhero career. Having said that, I started working odd jobs as a means of income until I could find something more permanent. One of these jobs involved working in a warehouse that dealt with electronic goods; mostly radios and TVs though.

During this time, I overheard that a few of the workers were running a drug transport business on the side. Naturally, I started doing some snooping and learned that a major shipment would be coming within the next 24 hours. I also learned that this shipment was valued at 5 million dollars and that several armed henchmen would be overseeing this operation. Till this day, I am not sure what gave me the courage to step up to the plate. After all, what did I know about apprehending gunmen? I suppose that in good conscience I could not walk away from this.

And so it was… At 2 AM a shipment would arrive at 744 Fort Square. A legend would be born that night. I put on my homemade costume. Red and silver were my colors. With a large lightning bolt emblazoned on my chest and a ski mask to conceal my identity, I was ready for action. Three burly men exited the van and were getting ready to make the exchange. With this, I sprang into action. Running at top speed, I knocked them off their feet. I then proceeded to melt their weapons with my lightning. Suddenly, a large man smashed a chair over my head. I tried to get up but was unable to do so as the three original perpetrators were pelting me with a crowbar. A fourth man approached them and said, “Lets find out who this person is.” Unbeknownst to me the 4th man was an undercover cop. After the men, put down their crowbars, he pulled a badge on them and told them they were under arrest. With in the next moment another 8 cops appeared and apprehended all of the perpetrators. I thanked the officer for his help and proceeded to walk away.

Before, I could walk away, he said, “Hey wait up. My name is Lieutenant Price. I have a few questions for you.” Over the next hour, I shared with the lieutenant what I knew. He then spoke to me about working for the police and help them with their undercover work. At first, I was reluctant to accept this officer. However, Lieutenant Price offered a salary with benefits, to train me in hand-to-hand combat, and to have someone tailor a costume that would look well… less goofy. Naturally, the public was to never know of this arrangement until many years later…

Epilogue… A Chance Encounter

Do you remember the 1959 smash hit “Pulling through the Years”. How about Hank Aaron’s 800th homerun, President Al Gore, or the television series known as Mr. Dugan? Of course not- it never happened. It certainly did not happen on this world or should I say universe? However, somewhere out there, in a plain unknown to us, all of these things happened or could happen. Very few know of its existence. Even fewer folks know of its whereabouts. For those who dare to know or try to understand, they try to grasp the “Flash Point”.

The “Flash Point” has been described as a crack in the universe allowing one to see mundane events as never seen before. However, be wary; the “Flash Point” is unlike any other gateway. The opening of possibilities leaves one open to a plethora of dangerous choices. Your choice can produce ripple effects understood by very few. All one can do is ride the “Flash Point”, appreciate its enormity, and pray real hard.

George Brittel, January 1924

I remember seeing an old man, speaking of my destiny. He kept rambling how the “Flash Point” sent him to help me finishing writing “Pulling through the Years”. Personally, I thought this was ridiculous. I was just a simple hobbyist fiddling about with my guitar. More importantly, I don’t think the world is ready for a female guitarist. I think I will stick to my original plan; nursing school.

Lucy Brittel, July 1958

I have to admit it was quite an unusual sight. A distinguished gentleman dressing as if he lived in the 1920’s asked me if I ever heard of the “Flash Point”. My first impression was to say “No”. However, I had the feeling that this was not the case. I am fairly certain I had met this individual many years ago. I don’t know; there is something familiar about him.

We are the Sponge Bob Generation

Can you believe it my oldest boy is turning eight? Standing at 4 foot 2, he’s not a little boy anymore. As with all growing boys, their impressions of popular culture change. Sesame Street anyone? No thank you daddy, I think I’ll watch Sponge Bob.

Sponge Bob you say? Should I be worried about this? After all… In any case, I am not sure when he started liking Sponge Bob; however, Sponge Bob has clearly replaced Thomas the Tank Engine. Having said that, I did the responsible thing and viewed a number of the episodes. Ironically, it borrows much of its material from the old cartoons. Its use of language is interesting (to say the very least) as it uses analogies casually in its dialog. The following quotes are a few examples;

"Oh! I didn't realize it was happy hopping moron day!"

"I can't see my forehead.”

"All right! Which one of you flatfoots stole my lollipop?"

"Holographic meatloaf! My favorite!"

"You're nuttin' but pure evil, just like the newspaper comics!"

Obviously, the language can also be a bit crass. However, its much tamer than what kids hear in the schoolyard or bus on the way to school. At the same time, a number of its story-lines stress the importance of hygiene, treating your friends nicely, and working hard. Of course, with all the bantering taking place it is safe to assume that my child might miss this and other messages and will instead focus on the… well… bantering.

Needless to say, parenting in the 21st century can be very tricky as our children have far more viewing/playing options than I did. Despite it all, I understand censorship does not work as it only encourages the child to find a way to access the media through alternate methods. This is why as parents it’s important to review the media your children watch/play and have that parent/child conversation to fill in the missing blanks and correct misunderstandings. With this I close with the following quote, “Squidward, you're steaming. You're like a steamed vegetable, only smarter!"

Rock on, Rabbi Vigi!!

The other day my brother sent me an e-mail via Facebook in which he asked for an e-mail address that excepts large attachments. Naturally, I was wondering what this was about. Soon enough, I found out. Two days later, my brother sent me an e-mail in which he indicated he recorded a song in a studio and wanted to know what I thought about the tune.

Over the years I have heard him sing many times. From the early days when he was fiddling on his guitar, to his guitar recordings, to his performances at family weddings; a good time was always had. My other brother (Abie) also used to play the guitar. Over time, both of them improved their performance with practice. Having said that, there is no question Vigi took it to another level. Over the past few years, my wife and I attended several weddings in which he performed a part of the ceremony and at each wedding; he only seemed to get better.

By now, you must have figured out that I might have a strong bias in his favor. So… rather than write a review, click on the link below and let me know what you think.

June 25, 2009; The Day the 1980’s Died

For those who are in my age bracket, you should remember it well. Whether you were a middle school or high school student Thriller defined much of the 1980’s music. It is well known that Thriller is the best selling album of all time. When one considers who was vying for the spot at the time this feat is only more amazing. During this time Purple Rain, She’s So Unusual, Can’t Slow Down, Born in the USA, Footloose, 1984, Make it Big, Synchronicity, and Like a Virgin were released. All of these albums were monster hits of course. In fact, it was a really great time to listen to music. However, Michael’s music always managed to top artists like Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Prince, The Police, Van Halen, Huey Lewis and the News, Bruce Springsteen, and many other greats. This is not surprising when you consider the following;

· Beat it made use of the guitar talents of Eddie Van Halen and paved the way for other heavy metal acts to score chart-topping songs.

· Thriller paid homage to the classic monster films and bought true added value to the music video.

· Billie Jean introduced us to the Moonwalk.

· Three words- “red leather jacket”

After Thriller, Michael Jackson released several follow up albums all of which were commercial successes. However, none of them would sell as well. This as well as other circumstances personally hurt Jackson. I remember that Michael would keep trying to outdo Thriller and would be frustrated by his inability to do so. This phenomenon is not uncommon as it affected many of his contemporaries. Madonna and Bruce are masters at reinventing themselves while other artists like Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, and Huey Lewis and the News have faded into obscurity.

Having said that, I think its important to understand that life can be an unpredictable roller coaster. One never knows when the “ups and down” will occur. Remember the “ups” are a gift to be appreciated; not to be taken for granted. When the “downs” occur, keep in mind it could have been worse. For example, a few months ago I caught a nasty virus and as a result went to several doctors. I am thankful it was nothing fatal. I am thankful that my family and boss were very supportive during this uncertain time. I am thankful that this happened a month before the swine flu epidemic hit. I am thankful that I started an exercise regimen almost 3 years ago as this certainly helped my recovery.

So… like many others I am playing the music, watching the videos, and remembering to appreciate the good even during the tough times.

May the Father’s Day Be With You

During the late 1970s and early 1980s the Star Wars trilogy was watched and beloved by many children all over the world. Over the years I have watched and re-watched the trilogy well… too many times to count. I am not embarrassed to say that I own both the original and special edition of the trilogy, dragged my wife to the theater to see both the special edition of the trilogy as well as all of the prequels.

One of my earliest childhood memories naturally involves Star Wars during which we left the theater, as my younger brother was afraid of Darth Vader. I do not remember much more from this experience, which can be attributed to me being 5 years old at the time. A few years later, The Empire Strikes Back was released. I remember my father took my brother and I into the city to see the movie. If my memory is correct we started the day joining my father at his workplace during which we played with some kind of computer outfitted with tape disks. Around lunchtime (or perhaps later in the day) we saw “The Empire Strikes Back.” I remember the snow battle scene, the fight with Darth Vader, and Yoda of course. I also remember that we were blown away by this movie. Soon enough, my brothers and I became avid collectors of the Star Wars action figures. In fact, every Shabbos (Saturday) we would play with the action figures and either reenact part of the film or create our own Star Wars adventures.

A few years later, Return of the Jedi came to the theaters. Once again, we were mesmerized by the trilogy. From the special effects, to the action, to the characters, to the heart, this movie had it all. Sixteen years later… The Phantom Menace came out. OK, Jar Jar haters get it out of your system. Kidding aside, while Episode I was not as good as any of the original trilogy films; it was fun. I enjoyed the duel between Darth Maul and Obi Wan and thought Palpatine the politician was very clever.

In the coming years Episode 2 and 3 were released and received mixed reviews. Despite it all, I enjoyed both films. I also realize why the prequels were doomed to be a let down on some level. The original series is a part of my childhood where as the prequel is not. I recall fondly enjoying this movie with my father and brothers. I also remember how my father would dispense his fatherly advice ala Yoda; “Do or Do not. There is no try.” On the surface it sounds silly. However, on a deeper level there is nothing silly about instilling a work ethic in your children. In fact, while my brothers and I have all taken very different career paths (two rabbis, a lawyer, and an educational administrator) we all share the same work ethic because there is no try; only do or do not. With that, I say Happy Fathers Day and “May the Father’s Day be with You.”

Grooving with the Black Eyed Peas

Once again I find myself sitting in front of the computer checking my e-mail, Face Book updates, a variety of blogs and web sites, and of course the iTunes Store. On the iTunes store I noticed a small advertisement proclaiming that a new album from the Black Eyed Peas is available. Naturally, I clicked on the link and previewed a few of the tracks. Initially, my first thought was, “this does not sound like the Black Eyed Peas”. However, as I previewed a few additional tracks, I became more curious as the music samples were very catchy. So… I downloaded the album, synced my iPod, and took it along for my morning jog.

As I started to listen to the first song, I thought to myself, “this does not sound like the Black Eyed Peas, yet I find this music very enjoyable.” As I continued my jog I heard a few more of their tracks I noticed a few interesting trends. On the surface, their new sound relies on the electronica and a Hip/Hop sound.  However, a closer listen reveals that this music draws from a variety of sounds including disco, Prince, James Brown, classic rock, 1980s, and other genres. Most of the songs include great bass and guitar riffs as well as vocalizations that are very pleasant. My favorites are “Rockin to the Beat”, “One Tribe”, “Alive”, “Out of My Head”, and “Missing You.” ”Alive” took me back to the 1980s with its piano- bass combo along with the duet counterpoint setup. “Out of my Head” reminded me of “Funky Town”, a couple of Prince songs, and the energy of James Brown. “One Tribe” provides a positive message and the tune is fairly catchy. “Rockin to the Beat” reminds me of Michael Jackson’s “PYT” song (sort of). “Missing You” has a very 1970’s feel to it.

All in all, I found the music to be positive, fun, nostalgic, and great for the morning jog. Having said that, please be forewarned that the music does include a few expletives and that for the most part it is a “Pop” album. Fortunately, the expletives are not mean spirited and as mentioned above the music is fun. On a final note, I shared the music with my wife. She had the same reaction and said, “ this does not sound like the Black Eyed Peas but I do like it.”

Growing up Analog

Recently a colleague of mine told me that technology is defined as "anything that was invented after you were born." The idea behind this is that “new inventions” are different from the “technology” we always had access to. Simply put, we often take older technologies for granted; where as new technologies seem quite different. At the time, I thought about this idea and wondered if I agree with the definition.

Well… it is a few months later and I am still not sure if I agree with this definition of technology. Subsequently, I continued to think about this idea a bit more and recalled the technology I interacted with as a child.

My first memory of “new technology” was the color television.  I believe the introduction of the color TV occurred sometime in the 1970s. I remember we were all talking about how different TV will look in color. During the early 1980s, we were introduced to the Commodore 64. I remember playing some kind of knockoff version of Frogger, Pac Man, and Donkey Kong. In fact, I think Jump Man Junior was the Donkey Kong knockoff. I also remember the programs were loaded either through a Floppy Disk or a Tape Drive. In retrospect the graphics were of course tacky. However, at the time it was new and exciting and was greeted with much enthusiasm.

Similarly, I remember creating mock radio shows and ultimate radio mixes with a Tape Recorder and a tape-dubbing machine. At the time, the tape recorders came with an external microphone. At the same time comic books were all the rage. Prior to the discovery of comic books you couldn’t get my brothers and I to read books.  In many ways, this genre of fantasy and adventure opened us to the wonderful world of reading. Soon enough, we would seek books similar to our comic story lines and would draw our own comic book series.

So… where am I going with this “Jacob recalls the past yet again blog?” Could it be a lesson for us all to reflect on? Well you figured it out. Anyhow… these anecdotes remind me of what excited me about reading and how as a parent I should be looking for these teachable moments with my own children. Furthermore, one should not try to force the teachable moment; just let it happen. For example, at the time the Commodore 64 did not have a profound impact on me. While the games were entertaining, I am fairly certain it did not change how I learned. On the other hand, comic books did. Not only did I read these periodicals on a regular basis, I was inspired to create my own comic book characters along with their continuing adventures.

As I reflect on this further, I have come to believe these fantastic stories from my youth gave me the spark to write grants, create programs, and pursue other endeavors as it helped me find my creativity. With this in mind, I am very thankful for the day my Mom bought us a stack of comic books as it helped me discover my creative side.

Finding the Light

Chapter 1- Finding the Light

It was a beautiful day in 1959. At the time, I was working for a scientist involved with involved with learning the origins of life. A number of variables including solar energy were used in this experiment. Along the way, an unavoidable accident turned me into a human lightning rod. I cannot divulge the details of this error as it may help one of my enemies uncover personal details of my life.

At the time, I did not think much of my accidental encounter. However, in a few short days, it would soon become clear; this was no run of the mill scientific accident. My body started to heat up with temperatures as great as 112 Fahrenheit; yet I did not feel ill. The doctors did not know what to make of it either. Subsequently, I continued to conduct my regular daily task.

Several weeks passed, and things only became stranger. My hear beat seemed to beating at a much faster pace and my temperature was now peaking at 120 Fahrenheit. Additionally, I lost close to 15 pounds in a period of 4 weeks. This seemed very bizarre as I was making no attempt to lose weight yet low and behold I was dropping pounds weekly. Fortunately, I previously weighed 330 pounds and did not feel ill at all. In fact, I had never felt better before. Therefore, the weight loss seemed harmless.

Several more weeks passed and my temperature change and weight loss continued to be progressing. Then, something really strange happened. I was talking on the phone with a friend while holding a slab of uncooked beef in my hand. I know what you’re thinking. Why was I holding a slab of beef in my hand? For the moment let’s not go there. In any case, I was talking on the phone for probably about 10 minutes and noticed that my hand cooked the meat.  This did not sit well with me. I knew it was time to find out just what happened to me when “the accident” occurred 2 months ago. Over the next few days, I tried to inquire specific details about the nature of our electrical experiments. My boss did not seem willing to disclose this information. I suppose that should not come as a big surprise.

This left me with no recourse and led me to doing a little undercover work. After work, I discretely snooped around and uncovered several classified files. It seems that the so called electrical experiments were only one part of their design. In fact, the experiments were primarily focusing on creating super humans through DNA manipulation. Simply put, the accident was no accident; we were guinea pigs. A further review of their files revealed that their earlier experiments resulted in the death of several former employees. Additionally, it appeared that two of their “volunteers” achieved a limited measure of success but also suffered dangerous side effects.

I continued to peruse the files, when suddenly I heard several foot steps. Naturally, I quickly put the files away and hid in one of the closets. The foot steps continued and became increasingly louder. A moment later, two gentlemen and my boss were having a conversation about their plans. During this conversation, they discussed the need to obtain certain rare chemicals and their plans to rob a bank as a means to raise the capital needed for the acquisition of the rare chemicals. Several moments later, they left the room. I waited approximately 15 minutes and then proceeded to check if they left the building. Afterwards, I continued to review their files and discovered they were involved in the smuggling of illegal weapons as well as other businesses.

Needless to say, I was angry and concerned about the information I uncovered. I wanted to alert the police of their upcoming heist but wasn’t sure how to approach this problem. It was clear to me, that it would be unwise to report this information under my name. It was also clear that my boss and his group of thugs were pretty well organized. At the same time, they were performing inhumane activities and posed a threat to our fair city. It then occurred to me that perhaps I should establish an alter ego who would try to stop their wrong doings. With this, I figured it was time to find out what new abilities I acquired. I started to focus on emanating heat from my hands.

After practicing for several hours, I managed to shoot a bolt of lightning. OK, so it wasn’t quite a bolt of lightning. It was more like a quick flash of lightning. Still, it was pretty cool. I did not really have much control of this ability. I knew if I focused my aggression through my hands, they would become heated and even emit lightning. However, the intensity of heat was kind of unpredictable. A little later that day, I attempted to fly. I started this process by starting to run and attempting to jump. Unfortunately, this effort proved to be fruitless. After several attempts it became clear that I could not fly. On the lighter side, I was able to run at the top speed of 30 miles an hour.

In the meantime, I continued my snooping adventures at work. It seemed that my boss was in the middle of putting together some kind of deal involving illegal arms. At this point, I gathered enough evidence to expose him to the authorities. With this in mind, I used an anonymous identity to speak to the FBI and sent them reams of incriminating evidence. Soon enough, the FBI planned a raid and put a stop to their actions. Obviously, there is more to this story. However, for the usual reasons I cannot divulge state secrets. However, this experience changed me as a person. I could never go back to my daily routines. It was also clear the world was becoming a more dangerous place. Although, I did not don the costume yet, Lightning Man would soon emerge.

Editor’s Note: Chapter 1 is reconstructed from several print and audio interviews taken over period of 30 years with Lightning Man.

Editor’s Note 2: Lightning Man discovers his power of flight and other powers several years later.

Behind the Light; The Unauthorized Biography of Lightning Man

Introduction- Light Reflections

For as long as we can remember he was always there to protect our fair city. They say, “Lightning doesn’t strike twice.” Be that as it were, he struck against crime an infinite number of times. For 40 years he was a thorn to every criminal and a savior to our fair citizens. In his later years, his powers seemed to have weakened. It has been said that his powers were solar based and that the lightning emblem on his chest was both a conductor for his abilities and a storage component. This is mostly conjecture as no reliable source has verified the validity of this as well as other theories posted on the Internet. Still… in those later years, his appearances were less frequent.

His last known appearance was in 1999. During this time, he fought a group of bandits known as the “Cookie Syndicate”.  This group would terrorize local business owners with open acts of violence. Most owners paid protection money to the syndicate. Needless to say, Lightning Man put a stop to these thugs. However, this battle was not easily won. There are several witness accounts that believe he took 3 bullets during the struggle. There are other accounts that believe 6 bullets were involved and that at least one hit his head. No one is sure if this caused internal bleeding. It is clear that he sustained life threatening injuries from this incident. In fact, one informant has told us he saw him limp away. To this end, our book attempts to uncover the man, the mystery, the legend, and what became of him.

After the “Cookie Syndicate” incident, he was never seen in public again. Some say, he still fights crime quietly. It would explain a number of unusual circumstances. However, no one can be sure. After all, much of his origins and personal life still remains a mystery. Naturally, this made the task of writing this book that much more difficult. We interviewed key friends and colleagues that worked with him during the 40-year span of his crime-fighting career. This includes Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Price, reporter James Ciandra, Mayor Jill Winston, Sergeant Millie Brown, Dr. Arthur Windell, and Dr. Alice Randall. Additionally, several villains and acquaintances were interviewed thus providing a broader perspective of the man and the myth. Finally, archived interviews and news stories were used to piece together his story including several interviews never seen in print.

With this, we begin our journey almost 50 years ago to what seemed a simpler time…
